Zipfile [92k] Password is required

- Requires a server that runs PHP (most UNIX-based servers,
including the greens.org server, do this).
- Fits the screen resolution standard of 800x600
- Easy to add submenus to (good for larger sites that have
sections with subsections)
- Uses PHP programming to show visitors the latest news about
this candidate or campaign from the GPUS News Database and
allows visitors to sign up for an email list (you'll receive an
email each time someone signs up and will have to maintain the
list separately).

Instructions
-
Send an email to Brent
McMillan (include name, email, snail mail, and daytime phone
for the candidate and the campaign manager, and the name of the state
or local Green Party) to obtain the password for downloading the
templates.
-
Download the zip file for the template
you'd like to use and unzip it into a new directory. Voila! The
website template consists of all the files ending in .html (or .php
for template 3) and the graphics in the 'images' directory. If the
freshly unzipped site displays a bunch of broken images, make sure
they got unzipped into a separate subdirectory called 'images'. If
not, create the directory yourself and put all the files ending in
.gif and .jpg in it.
-
Replace graphics: Replace 'GPUSTemplateX_Candidate.gif'
with a photo of your candidate. Replace 'GPUSTemplateX_Header.gif'
with a matching graphic that lists your candidate's name, office, date
and location. Download the Photoshop templates (labeled 'Header X PSD')
and JPG/GIF graphics listed above to help with this.
-
Replace title: replace the title on every
single page (currently the title for all pages is '[Candidate] for
[Office], [Date]' -- not very helpful, is it!)
-
Replace meta tags: Replace the
'Description' and 'Keyword' meta tags on every single page with a
short description of the candidate and a list of up to 30 keywords.
'Description' is currently set to '[30 word description about the
candidate]' and 'Keywords' is currently set to 'vote, green, party, election, candidate, politics, nader, green
party, progressive'. These tags are located in the top HEAD portion of
the page and do not show up on the page but are very influential to
your ranking in search engines and subsequent ability of searchers to
find your site.
-
Replace text: Replace all the body text
through out the site with new content for your candidate or campaign.
Feel free to use the sample text as a guide.
-
Additional instructions for GPUS Template 3:
Read the comments on the 'news.php' page and in the news box on the 'footer.php'
page to learn how to post news to the GPUS News Database and
automatically incorporate it into your new site. Replace the email
address on the 'subscribe.php' page to turn the script on and direct
the subscription emails to the email of your choosing.
-
Post your site: FTP or otherwise copy your
site files onto a server of your choosing. Get
an account on the greens.org server if you'd like to host your
site there.
-
Submit your site to search engines: Find
the most appropriate category for your site in the Open
Directory Project (DMOZ). Click the 'add URL' link at the top
right and submit your site. Most major search engines will incorporate
your site's listing within 6-8 weeks of it being added to DMOZ. There
is no need to pay to get into search engines, so please don't do that.
-
Publicize your site: Don't forget to put
your web address on all your cards, flyers, etc. Tell everyone about
it! Enjoy!
