D. Foreign Affairs - Military and International Treaties, Nuclear Weapons

Chapter I: Democracy Section D: Foreign Policy

Number 1: US Military Withdrawal from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan

The US military occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as billions of dollars in military aid, covert action, and troop deployments to Iran, Pakistan, and other Middle Eastern and Central Asian states are all part of a decades old neocolonial war for oil and gas and the geopolitical power that control over these resources brings to dominate the rest of the world.

The US has no moral or legal right to militarily dominate this region and, through regional domination, the world.

US military operations and occupations in the region have undermined peace in the region and put the security of the United States and rest of the world at far greater risk.

Given the widespread destruction that the US military, its civilian contractors, and allied corporate interests have reigned down on Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries in the region, the US military and its contractors can play no credible or constructive role in building peace in the region as far as the vast majority of the region's people are concerned.

Peacemaking in the region must be internationalized, with the various indigenous political interests encouraged to negotiate mutual accommodations with the support of the Arab League, other Muslim countries, and the United Nations.

All parties guilty of terrorist acts and other war crimes and crimes against humanity, including US leaders who started these wars and occupations, must be brought to justice through international police action under international law and international courts.

The US has a responsibility to provide humanitarian aid to Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries in the region to help in rebuild after decades of hugely destructive covert and overt wars and economic sanctions. The US should fund humanitarian aid for reconstruction and international peacekeeping forces if requested by the governments of the affected countries.

The Greens therefore call for the following:

  1. Immediate cessations of US combat operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the rest of the region.

  2. Full withdrawal of US military forces, civilian military contractors, and corporate interests on the fastest possible timetable consistent with the safety of bringing home US troops from Iraq, Afghanistan, and the other states of the region.

  3. US diplomatic support for all of the region’s states and political groups to negotiate agreements for mutual security, peacekeeping, and reconstruction in the zones of conflict in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

  4. US funding for humanitarian aid for the reconstruction of Iraq and Afghanistan under the administration of local and international agencies and, if requested by the people of these countries, international peacekeeping forces.
