Social Justice II, G. LABOR
- We re-affirm the legal right of all workers to organize, to form a union and to bargain collectively without hindrance. This right was guaranteed by the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1936.
- To re-enforce that Act, we support Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) which guarantees the right to form a union by the card-check method.
- All workers have the right to inform others or be informed about a union being organized where they work
This includes advertising and recruiting.
- We demand the repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act which promotes open shop..
- Workers must have the following rights and protections:
- to elect representatives to the Board of Directors of the business where they work, and their representatives will have equal rights with management.
- to elect their own union officers.
- No permanent replacement of striking workers.
- No forced overtime.
- to flexible work schedules to allow managing family or personal affairs.
- to be paid a living wage, including temporary or permanent workers.
- Until we have universal health care, employer must pay half of workers health insurance.
- All workers must have unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation, access to job search programs.
- All workers must have minimum pensions, vested and portable.
- Mediation must be the first available solution to labor-management disputes, with agreed time limits.
- New Union members must have the right to submit a first contract to binding arbitration at the request of the union.
- Labor must have the first right to buy out a company for sale or going bankrupt, or outsourcing to another
state or country.
- Labor has the right to stock ownership and oversight of the investment of its own funds in the company where it works.
- When a company purchases or merges with another company, it must honor all existing collective bargaining agreements and contracts.
- Agricultural and other excluded workers must be covered by federal labor laws, except where state laws offer more protection.
- We support day-care service offered at every workplace or reasonably near the workplace..
- We encourage and support government subsidizing of cooperative ownership and management of enterprises whenever a buy-out is possible.
- Management’s right to close a workplace and move to a lower-pay locale must be circumscribed to protect the local workforce and their job security.
- We support the 35-hour work week.
- Occupational safety and enforcement (OSHA) is the law and must be enforced. This law protects workers against dangerous equipment, chemicals, polluted air, fertilizers and other workplace hazards indoors and outdoors. .
- The law on family medical leave for workers must not be circumvented, undermined or in any way reduced in range or time.
