Citizens of Wisconsin to Vote on Validity of Iraq War -
Thanks to Wisconsin Green Party

In 2006, citizens in WI, will have the chance to vote on the legitimacy of the Iraq war thanks to an effort spearheaded by the Green Party of Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Green party, along with other community groups, gathered enough signatures for a referendum to place the question “Shall the United States commence a humane, orderly, rapid and comprehensive withdrawal of US military personnel and bases from Iraq” on ballots in communities across the state.

"This successful exercise in democracy is the result of a state coalition—church groups, peace and justice organizations, veterans, and concerned citizens have worked hard to bring this question to the voters," said Jeff Peterson, coordinator of the Bring the Troops Home Coalition, and a member of the Wisconsin Green Party. "The effort has really taken off, as grassroots efforts do."

"We are glad to see that the Milwaukee Common Council has voted to give people a voice on the issue of Iraq," said Ruth Weill, Co-chair of the Wisconsin Green Party and resident of Milwaukee. "The war in Iraq affects our communities, our loved ones are deployed there, and our taxes are spent on the war, rather than on health care, education, and security at home. We support giving people a say about the policies that affect them so deeply.”

Rapper Head-Roc Questions the Political System, but Never Doubts the Power of a Good Beat

Head-Roc, a member of the DC Statehood Green Party, performed at the Operation Ceasefire concert on the National Mall on September 24 along with musicians like Jello Biafra, The Coup, Steve Earle, Thievery Corporation, Joan Baez and Le Tigre to advocate for the immediate end to the war in Iraq.
Head-Roc’s most recent album, Negrophobia - released in the fall of 2005, deals with a number of political and social issues. “Music is a great facilitator to keep people’s minds open and keep them listening so that they’ll hear the message,” says 34-year old Head-Roc.

The album deals with issues like racism, and imperialism. “As a descendent of African slaves I wanted to look at American history and the atrocities the American government committed.[and] out of my anger as an American citizen watching the actions of my government and that they and other western governments can do anything to the rest of the world. “

Musically, Head-Roc finds inspiration in the go-go and soul music he grew up listening to. “Soul music is the place where rhythm is home,” he says. My religion is rhythm—I’m serious about that. I really think there is power in the pulse of a drum to snare you and mesmerize you and open your mind. Music can help you make a decision. Music can change the tide of battle.”

Look for big things to come from DC hip-hop in 2006. Head-Roc is collaborating with the Thievery Corporation [DC Based label/producers] to start a new progressive hip-hop label. “I think people are looking for something fresh and new in hip-hop—something that speaks to millions about their dreams and hopes. One of my goals is to make the disenfranchised and downtrodden aware of each other. Once we are aware of each other we can come up with a plan to change the world.”

Head-Roc’s latest album is available for purchase through the Green Party’s online store at online store, or by calling 1-866-41-GREEN.
