GREEN NEWS....

NATIONAL

Several national caucuses of the Green Party of the United States are organizing. Here's some information for those interested in joining:

NATIONAL: The Green Party of the United States has moved into its new national office.
    1711 18th Street NW, Washington, DC 20009.
    Telephone: 202-319-7191 or 202 319 7192; fax: 202-319-7193.

NEW YORK: Paul Glover has announced his candidacy for Mayor of Ithaca.  Paul, who is founder of the Ithaca HOURS local currency, the Ithaca Health Fund, the Whole Ithaca Stock Exchange (WISE), the Ithaca Trolley Authority, and Citizen Planners of Los Angeles, has also entered his name for the 2004 Green nomination for President of the United States.  More at http://glover-mayor.org/

NEW MEXICO: The Green Party of New Mexico is opposing a pair of state constitutional amendments purportedly aimed at education reform.  Amendment One would abolish the elected Board of Education and replace it with a secretary appointed by the governor. Greens call this is a top-heavy approach and insist that  a better solution is to empower local boards to work with teachers, parents, and students to ensure the best  quality education for our children. Amendment Two would divert an extra 1% of New Mexico's Permanent  Fund to pay for "Education Reform" for the next twelve years.  Instead of raiding, and devaluing, the fund, Greens propose raising the severance taxes on oil, gas, and mineral extraction which make up this fund, thereby increasing both the value and payout from this fund.  The election is September 23.  More information: ricklass@newmexico.com

  • Tell Congress to vote NO on an amendment that will discriminate against same-sex couples and families.  The proposed amendment will prohibit not only same-sex marriage, but any rights afforded married couples to gay and lesbian families, including domestic partner benefits and related civil rights laws preventing bias based on sexual orientation.  Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) has announced a hearing on the "Defense of Marriage Act" scheduled for September 4 at 2 pm.

  • Support HR 676: "The US National Health Insurance Act", AKA "Expanded & Improved Medicare For  All Bill", introduced by Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.).  Over 40 million Americans lack health coverage, but thanks to articles in two major medical journals (JAMA, NEJM), publicly owned national health insurance (also called single-payer, Medicare for All, and Just Health Care) is back on the table.  Clinton & Gore ripped it out of the Democratic Party platform, especially when Clinton introduced his insurance-company-friendly 'managed care' plan in 1993.  Greens and a few Dems like Conyers have supported real national health insurance all along, while most of the Dems & Repubs offer feeble reform plans that leave profit-hungry HMOs and insurance firms in control.  National health insurance would save most Americans a lot of money, especially for middle and low income people, and would save the US $200 billion.  It would provide care for all, regardless of ability to pay, age, or prior medical condition, and cover long term care and prescriptions.
