GREEN NEWS....

INTERNATIONAL: Annie Goeke, co-chair of the International Committee, and committee member Jim Polk, a Virginia Green, represented US Greens at the WTO meeting in Cancun, Mexico. Annie and Jim joined farmers and thousands of other anti-globalization activists at the Day of Action Against Globalization and War protest, and witnessed the collapse of the WTO talks as developing nations rejected demands from the US to open their economies to privatization of water, subsidized agricultural exports, and other schemes to drain resources, create poverty and dependence, and repeal eco and human rights protections and democracy for the benefit of US-based corporations. Stay tuned for more; read the report from Annie and Jim at http://www.gp.org/articles/goeke_polk_09_12_03.html

MICHIGAN: At a rally to announce his re-election campaign, Kalamazoo City Commissioner Don Cooney announced his decision to join the Green Party of Kalamazoo, saying "I have always stood for the same things that the Green Party stands for." Cooney is professor of Social Work at Western Michigan University, and was first elected to the City Commission in 1997. Cooney has championed progressive causes for many years, organizing the Living Wage campaign in 2001, out of which he formed the county-wide Kalamazoo Poverty Initiative.

PENNSYLVANIA: On September 11, a federal court ruled in favor of Green candidates John Stith and Thomas Linzey in their court challenge against Pennsylvania's fees for candidates to get on the state ballot. The 3rd US Circuit Court of Appeals called the fees unconstitutional, declaring that wealth shouldn't be a factor in whether a person can run for public office.

CALL CONGRESS

* Call, fax, write a letter, or pay a visit
* Contact information: Congressional switchboard: (202) 224-3121
US House of Representatives: http://www.house.gov/
US Senate: http://www.senate.gov

  • Tell Senators to vote NO on nuclear bunker busters: The Senate will soon vote on the Energy and Water Appropriations bill (S 1424). Floor amendments are expected to reduce funds for new nuclear weapons.  Senators should support the amendments and eliminate Bush's request of $15 million in his FY 2004 budget plan for the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator, a nuclear bunker busting weapon.

  • Tell Senators to reverse the FCC rule change: The FCC's recent media deregulation will concentrate corporate ownership of newspapers, TV & radio stations, etc., lowering the quality of news coverage. Democracy depends on access for diverse views and information! More: http://www.mediareform.net

  • Tell Senators to support S 1510, the Permanent Partners Immigration Act of 2003: Right now, US immigration regulations discriminate against binational same-sex couples by forcing them to separate when one immigrates to the US. S 1510 gives same-sex partners of US citizens and lawful permanent residents the same treatment that legal spouses receive.

  • Tell Senators to support H. Con.Res 111: American citizen Rachel Corrie, 23, was crushed to death by an army bulldozer in Rafah, Gaza on March 16, 2003 while protesting the demolition of Palestinian homes. The Israeli Army concluded she was killed accidentally, but eyewitnesses say otherwise. The resolution would require the US to investigate Rachel's death.
