GREEN NEWS....
CALIFORNIA: The League of Women Voters and the media
sponsors of the final two televised debates reversed their previous
decisions and included Green Party candidate Peter Camejo in the final two
debates. The sponsors changed their minds after at least two thousand
letters of protest, as well as Camejo's standing in a recent LA Times poll
and highly praised performance in an earlier debate. In the same LA Times
poll, Democrats ranked Camejo first in the debate with 25% saying he
"won" to 17% for McClintock and only 12% for Bustamante. Among
all voters Camejo was in a statistical tie with Schwarzenegger for second
place. More: http://www.votecamejo.org
COLORADO: The Green Party of Colorado blasted the
proposed eviction of Asian-owned businesses at Alameda Square in west
Denver intended to make way for a Wal-Mart 'Supercenter.' Wal-Mart wants
the site condemned in order to have the current tenants evicted, and is
demanding a $10 million tax subsidy from the city, with Mayor Hickenlooper
support. Greens note that Wal-Mart is infamous for its poverty-level
wages, harassment and discrimination of women, anti-union stance, and
reliance on overseas sweatshop labor. More: http://www.coloradogreens.org
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA: DC Statehood Green Party members
joined and led two major protests in DC: (1) a September 30 demo against a
proposed $90 million cut for funding-starved DC public schools, at which
Statehood Greens also blasted Mayor Anthony Williams' plan to take over
the school board and Congress's threat (awaiting a Senate vote) to force
school vouchers on DC, with the Mayor's support; (2) an October 1 demo
outside national GOP headquarters demanding that Congress relinquish
control over DC's budget and grant DC full legislative autonomy. A few
Statehood Greens were arrested for civil disobedience after occupying
Trent Lott's office. More: http://www.dcstatehoodgreen.org
GEORGIA: Hugh Esco will run in a November 4 special
election to choose a successor to 8th District State Representative Ralph
Twiggs, who died two weeks ago. Since 1989, Esco has worked as a
legislative advocate in the Georgia General Assembly for the Georgia
Environmental Project, the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign, the Georgia Bicycle
Federation, the Atlanta Union of the Homeless and the Georgia Green Party.
Esco chairs the Georgia Voter Choice Coalition and co-authored three
editions of 'Who Owns Georgia Politics: The Role of Private Money in
Public Elections.' More:

NORTH CAROLINA: Denny Best, Green candidate for city
council in Wilmington, has recieved the endorsement of the Wilmington
Journal, the city's African American news source. More:
http://wilmingtonjournal.com/
PENNSYLVANIA: Public transportation activist Tom Hutt
is the Green candidate for Philadelphia's 8th District council seat,
representing the progressive and racially diverse neighborhoods of
Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy, and Germantown. Hutt faces a vulnerable
Democratic incumbent who got less than 50% of the vote in Dem primary;
Greens note that the Republican candidate might play 'spoiler' and help
elect Hutt. The national Green Party's Coordinated Campaign Committee
urges Greens nationwide to support Hutt's high-profile race. Make checks
payable to Hutt for Council, 1229 Chestnut St RG1, Philadelphia, PA 19107;
to volunteer, call 267-252-0742. More: http://www.tomhutt.org
NATIONAL: The Green Party of the United States endorsed
a 'Stop the War Profiteers' campaign proposed by the North Carolina
Green Party. The campaign, initiated recently by Durham's Institute for
Southern Studies, calls for Congressional hearings on the influence of
US-based corporations doing business in Iraq. A handful of well-connected
US corporations are making millions and even billions from the invasion
and occupation of Iraq. The statement adopted by the Green Party calls for
an 'excess profits tax' similar to taxes instituted during every major
American conflict since 1860. More:

http://www.ncgreenparty.org
NATIONAL: Green presidential candidate David Cobb made
several stops on his ten-day tour of the east coast, including
Connecticut, New York City, and Washington, DC. Cobb, a Texan who now
resides in California, is also general counsel for the Green Party of the
United States. More: http://www.votecobb.org/
NATIONAL: At an October 2 press conference, Ralph Nader
said he will wait until the end of the year to decide on another run for
the White House. Nader called the defeat of Bush "the highest
priority" and said if he ran it would mostly likely be on the Green
ticket. (AP report)
CORRECTION: The Mississippi Green gubernatorial
candidate is Sherman Lee Dillon, not 'Lee Dillon.' Our apologies to
Mississippi!

Tell Senators to vote NO on President Bush's $87
billion dollar request for the occupation, and urge them to demand
that Bush bring all US troops home for the holidays and to support the
Uniting For Peace resolution in the UN, which would give the UN
primary authority in Iraq over humanitarian relief, reconstruction,
and the formation of a new government. Also suggested: ask Congress
members to deduct funding from the weapons in space programs, from the
mini-nukes programs, from the 6000 nuclear warheads attached to their
missiles, from the hair trigger alert nuclear weapons, from the
Trident and the Poseidon and new ships and planes that deliver
American WMDs around the world. And ask your Senators to demand that
the Dept of Defense account for that missing $ trillion according to
recent audits. More:

Tell Congress to support paper records for
electronic voting machines: Rep. Rush Holt (D-NJ) and over 30
cosponsors have introduced a bill that would require a
voter-verifiable audit trail on every voting system, called the 'Voter
Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act of 2003' (H.R. 2239). If
the bill is passed, we won't have to fight state by state and county
by county to preserve democratic elections. HR2239 is presently
in the Committee on House Administration. Urge Congress members to
pass it before Congress recesses in October.

Tell Congress to support a $215 million increase
for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP). The Senate voted against
the Schumer amendment, which would have provided a substantial
increase for ADAP and other Ryan White CARE Act programs. But with the
end of the appropriations process for FY 2004, there is a final
opportunity to urge Congress to pass the highest possible increase for
ADAP, which is critical to helping stop the spread of the virus as
well as improving the quality of life of those already infected. More:

Activists Coalition (ATAC) http://www.atac-usa.org

"Greening the Golden Triangle", by Sam Smith, in the print

(scroll down a little). "The Greens and the Libertarians have become
the two largest political parties in the country without a criminal
record. And the Green Party, unlike most others, is also growing,
reflecting the increase in those who have noticed that it alone views the
future as something to protect and improve rather than to exploit
viciously or treat as a toy in an ultimately terminal game of ecological
Russian roulette."
