CALIFORNIA: Building and Construction Trades Council
AFL-CIO has endorsed Tom Hutchings, Green candidate for 33rd Assembly
District (San Luis Obispo). Hutchings, a past member of the American
Postal Workers Union and several law enforcement agency labor
associations, organized the Hemet Police Department to associate with the
Peace Officers Association of California (PORAC), and is a retired member
of the California Correctional Peace Officers Association. More: http://www.votetom.org
and email: tom@votetom.org
CALIFORNIA: On October 22, Ralph Nader sent a fax to
the Green Party of California formally removing his name from the Green
Party primary ballot in California. David Cobb, Kent Mesplay, and Lorna
Salzman will appear on the California primary ballot. Nader and other
candidates can petition for inclusion, but have forfeited the ability to
be placed on the ballot upon request. More: Ballot Access News, November
1, 2003, page 6; http://cagreens.org
FLORIDA: The Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), an
international trade authority which will hold a summit in Miami from
November 19 to 21, is aggravating poverty throughout the western
hemisphere, eroding democracy, and strengthening the US-based corporate
agenda of privatization, deregulation, and other 'free market' policies.
The International Committee, the Miami-Dade Green Party, and Campus
Greens, are all helping organize to "Stop the FTAA!" Protests,
workshops, and a Green press conference are planned: see the Schedule of
Events below. *** Help needed! *** Green organizers ask all Greens &
friends who plan to attend and who support the FTAA protests to contribute
at least $5 -- and more if you can -- to the Miami-Dade Greens. Make your
check payable to the 'Green Party of Miami-Dade County,' and mail it
to Miami-Dade Green Party, PO Box 560325, Miami, FL 33256.

INDIANA: In the last Greensweek, we reported that the
St. Joe Valley Greens chapter in South Bend is launching its first 'GreenTV'
show on cable access (Comcast), channel 03. The contact for the show is
Victoria Webb, GreenTV Producer, 574315-0531, <vic@furiousdreams.com>.
The show recently covered the Notre Dame, South Bend rally protesting the
FTAA. Airtime for GreenTV will be 4 pm EST Thursdays on Channel 03,
beginning November 6. (Check local cable access listings for the schedule
in your area.) More: http://www.sjvgreens.org/
NEW JERSEY: Two New Jersey Green candidates for the
State Assembly (District 21) are challenging their state's marriage laws.
George DeCarlo and Ryan Reyes, a same-sex couple from Berkeley Heights who
obtained a civil union in Vermont three years ago, are seeking a court
ruling that would allow them to file a joint state income tax return in
New Jersey. A tax court judge in Trenton told George and Ryan that they
would have to pay a filing fee and resubmit their complaint before its
merits could be addressed. More: http://district21greens.org/
WISCONSIN: Wisconsin Greens congratulated the Forest
County Potawatomi and the Mole Lake Band of the Sokaogon Chippewa on their
purchase of the Crandon Mine. The purchase ends two decades of struggle to
protect the headwaters of the Wolf River and area lakes and rice beds from
mining-related water, air, and land pollution. Also, Wisconsin
Greens called for Wisconsin's Dream Act, AB95, to be enacted as law. The
bill, passed in its federal form by the US Senate Judiciary Committee,
would allow illegal immigrant students to gain legal status and to pay
in-state tuition rates at state colleges and universities.

NATIONAL: The number of voters registered in the Green
Party is approaching 300,000, according to Mike Feinstein, who tracks
Green election information. The current count is 296,919, with updates
expected from some states soon. Mike notes the difficulty of collecting
such data from state election boards; for example, Arizona keeps no state
total, requiring contact with every Arizona county. Furthermore, some
states don't provide for party registration.
