GREEN NEWS

CALIFORNIA: Tom Hutchings, who has already qualified for the Green ballot line in his campaign for the 33rd Assembly District, is also qualifying as a Democratic Party write-in candidate. Hutchings sought advice from political consultants who revealed that he could cross file as a write-in candidate on the Democratic Presidential Primary ballot on March 2, 2004. This was confirmed by the California Secretary of State and the San Luis Obispo County Clerk Recorder. More on Hutching's decision: http://www.votetom.org

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA: The DC Statehood Green Party will hold a Campaign 2004 Kick-off on Saturday, January 10, to begin planning for the 2004 election season and meet potential Statehood Green candidates for DC Council At-Large and Ward seats and for DC Shadow seats in Congress.  Statehood Greens plan to choose one or two 'targeted' candidates, whose campaigns will receive an early boost from the party. The kickoff will take place 11am to 2 pm at the University of the District of Columbia (Room A03 in Building 41). Two Green presidential candidates, David Cobb and Sheila Bilyeu, will be on the ballot in DC's primary on January 13 (DC primary day was moved to January to draw national  attention to the District's lack of democracy). • Tell Senators to order the Justice Department to stop unnecessary, unproductive spying on innocent Americans now! On November 23, the New York Times disclosed a confidential FBI memorandum detailing FBI efforts to engage in coordinated, nationwide surveillance of United for Peace and Justice and other organizations in the peace movement. There is evidence that the FBI and local police suspect 'terrorist' involvement in peace and justice protest activity in Miami and many other localities. This is a paranoid waste of money and misapplication of police resources. Millions of Americans are deeply committed to achieving peace and justice, and mass protest is one of their most productive ways of expressing their goals and their dislike of current Administration policies.

Repeated from earlier Greensweeks but still current:

  • Tell your Senators to vote NO on the Senate's version of HR 1904, the Healthy Forests Restoration Act  of 2003 and instead to support efforts that protect communities from forest fires without  weakening environmental protections. More:

  • Tell Congress to support a $215 million increase for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP)  More: The Save ADAP Committee, a working group of the AIDS Treatment Activists Coalition (ATAC) http://www.atac-usa.org

  • Tell Senators to keep student information private! Under a little known provision of the 'No Child Left Behind' Act, schools are required to turn over their entire student rolls, including confidential contact information, to military recruiters. The only way to prevent military recruiters from getting this student information is if a parent 'opts-out' -- but the unfunded No Child Left Behind Act has no allocated budget to tell parents about this option.

  • Tell Senators and Reps to respect Indian claims: The House has put into serious jeopardy billions of dollars in American Indian Trust Funds, when members of the House Appropriations Subcommittee  on the Interior put last minute language into the HR 2691 conference report on Interior appropriations. • Tell Reprepresentatives to support Rush Holt's bill HR 2239, which would require paper records for all votes cast on electronic voting machines.

  • Tell Senators to use their influence to see that the US Fish and Wildlife Service calls off proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act of 1973 that would make it easier for circuses, pet importers, and leather importers to capture, exploit, and kill certain endangered species.
