GREEN NEWS
ATTENTION Green candidates and campaigns: The Green
Party's Prairie Region Campaign School will take place March 19-21 in
Concepcion, Missouri, near Kansas City. Read the listing under Upcoming
Events below, or visit <http://www.prairieregiongreens.org>.
CALIFORNIA: Peter Camejo won 99 of 132 state delegates
in the California Green primaries on Super Tuesday (March 9), garnering
75.4 percent of the vote. Even though he is only on the ballot in a
handful of states, the California vote placed Camejo well out in front of
all other candidates in the race for the Green Party presidential
nomination. More: http://www.cagreens.org
GEORGIA: Georgia Greens welcomed the news that Ralph
Nader and Common Cause have joined the call for voter-verifiable paper
audit trails to confirm ballots cast on computer voting machines.

IOWA: The Iowa Green Party praised Gov. Tom Vilsack's
decision to keep the state out of the MATRIX database. MATRIX (Multistate
Anti-Terrorism Information Exchange) is currently in use in five states,
and compiles data on non-charged citizens. Iowa Greens have expressed
great concern over the danger of privacy violations raised by MATRIX.

MAINE: The Maine Green Independent Party, speaking out
in support of same-sex marriage rights, called on Governor Baldacci and
the Maine Legislature to immediately repeal the statutory definition of
marriage as being between a man and a woman, and to publicly affirm their
support of the constitutional guarantee of equal protection for all
citizens under the law. More: http://www.mainegreens.org
NEW YORK: Jason West, the Green Mayor of New Paltz, New
York, appeared on 'Late Night with Conan O'Brien' on Tuesday, March 16.
West made headlines by performing 25 same-sex marriages in February. More:

NEW YORK: Steve Krulick, Secretary of the Green Party
of Ulster County and a former State Committeeperson of the Green Party of
New York State, was elected on March 16, to the Ellenville Village Board,
with 57% of the vote. Krulick, a registered Green since 2000, is the first
Green elected in Ellenville or the surrounding Town of Wawarsing, in
southwestern Ulster County. Krulick ran with the endorsement of the
Democratic party and also on the independent Clean Sweep line, all of
whose candidates won, in three trustee races and one village justice race.
Subject to verification, Krulick believes he is the third Green to be
elected in New York State while registered as a Green.

OREGON: Members of the Pacific Green Party of Oregon
are expressing concerns about the New Oregon Primary proposed in a recent
'White Paper' published by the Oregon Progress Forum, and warn that it
would effectively end 'minor' party participation in general elections,
that it favors money and the 'major parties' instead of voters, and that
candidates with the most money would win elections. The premise of the
proposal is that ballots for key state and federal offices in the Oregon
primaries should be non-partisan, list all candidates, be mailed to every
voter, and allow voters to choose from any candidates listed regardless of
party affiliation.

PENNSYLVANIA: Northwest (Philadelphia) Greens held an
anti-war gathering on Friday, March 15, to prepare for the Global Day of
Action against War on Iraq (March 20, see Upcoming Events below). Held at
a Quaker meeting house, the event was cosponsored by Saint Vincent's
(Roman Catholic) Church and Women's International League for Peace
and Freedom. 35 people attended to hear Johanna Berrigan tell of her
recent trip to occupied Iraq. More: nwgreens@yahoo.com
WISCONSIN: The Wisconsin Green Party has joined
Libertarians and the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign <http://www.wisdc.org/>
in calling for election reform, but they were frustrated by the efforts of
the state Assembly Speaker and Senate Majority Leader (both Republicans)
to alter Senate Bill 12 -- which now prohibits rules that require full
disclosure of special interest money, eliminates incentives and funding to
those who voluntarily limit campaign spending, eliminates the requirement
for full disclosure of campaigncontributions, and allows contributions
from special interest conduits. Wisconsin Greens also joined the
Wisconsin Libertarian Party in calling for an end to the 6% matching funds
rule, and is demanding legislation that will reward ethical campaign
funding, not reliance on corporate funding and the promotion of recall
elections in order to collect matching funds from the state. More: http://www.wisconsingreenparty.org
NATIONAL: A videotape of the Green Party presidential
candidates' debate at the Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge, Mass.
in January is available from the Kennedy School. Participants were Kent
Mesplay, David Cobb, and Lorna Salzman, with Matt Gonzalez moderating. The
Kennedy School and the Massachusetts Green-Rainbow Party co-sponsored the
event. Contact Jennifer Choe at 617-496-2293.

INTERNATIONAL: Greens are marking the one-year
anniversary of peaceworker Rachel Corrie's death in the Gaza Strip on
March 16 with a renewed call for Congress to pass House Concurrent
Resolution 111 calling for an independent investigation of the incident.
On March 16, 2003, Corrie, a college student with the International
Solidarity Movement, was repeatedly run over by an Israeli soldier using a
CAT bulldozer, despite the fact that she was wearing a bright orange vest
and repeatedly shouted at him to stop. At the time, she was
participating in nonviolent protest against the demolition of a
Palestinian physician's home. The US Campaign to End the Israeli
Occupation has led the call for a Rachel Corrie National Day of Action on
March 16. Organizations (including Green Parties) can endorse a petition
for the investigation at <http://www.endtheoccupation.org/modinput.php?modin=50>.

Urge your Representative to provide funding in
Fiscal Year 2005 for the new Farmers' Market Promotion Program (FMPP).
Farmers' markets, roadside stands, and other direct marketing outlets
provide fresh, nutritious, affordable, and local farm products and
enable farmers to increase profits by selling directly to consumers.
The Farmers' Market Promotion Program (FMPP) was authorized in Section
10605 of the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 as a
competitive grants program, administered by USDA's Agricultural
Marketing Service. Statutory language authorizes grants to
agricultural cooperatives; local governments; non-profit corporations;
public benefit corporations; economic development corporations;
regional farmers' market authorities; and other eligible entities for
the purpose of establishing, expanding and promoting local farmers
markets and other forms of direct farmer-to-consumer markets. The farm
bill would allow the program to continue through 2007. More: http://www.thefutureisorganic.net
