DELAWARE: Vincent Sottile, 65, a retired US Defense Department employee, is running as a Green to represent communities around New Castle, Bear and Hares Corner on the New Castle County Council.  Sottile says his experience leading a maintenance association for part of the Wilton neighborhood near New Castle has prepared him for the office. Among his accomplishments are collecting dues from 100% of households by meetings with residents to work out payment plans and filing cases in small claims court.  Other priorities: making the county's work force more racially and ethnically diverse; moving the government toward using alternative sources of power. • Tell Your Senators and Reps. to vote against the 'Unborn Victims of Violence Act' (S1019/S146, HR1997). This legislation will undermine a woman's right to choose, and is intended to bestow individual rights on an unborn fetus so that the mother could be prosecuted for interfering with its birth. • Tell your Senators to add their names to the list of sponsors for the 'Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act.' Bacteria in humans are growing more dangerous because meat producers overuse antibiotics when they feed them to food animals.  Federal regulation is essential to control this misuse and maintain the effectiveness of these vital medications. Antibiotics must be remain effective for combating human illnesses. This legislation (S1460/HR2932) will phase out the practice of feeding massive quantities of antibiotics to food animals within two years of its enactment.

GOOD READS

Recommended articles, books, web sites:

  • Been Brown So Long, It Looked Like Green to Me: The Politics of Nature.
Book by Jeffrey St. Clair (Common Courage Press, 2003). Paperback, $19.95.  Award-winning investigative journalist Jeffrey St. Clair presents a shocking look at the war on the home front: the battle against the earth. From the ancient forests of Oregon to the toxic wasteland of Cancer Alley, St. Clair exposes the convergence of forces that are driving the exploitation of the environment.  Unsparing, yes. But not hopeless. From Apaches in Arizona fighting the Vatican's telescope on their sacred mountain to tree-sitters in the California redwoods, St. Clair chronicles a vibrant new movement confronting the forces of despoliation at every turn, united in their demand for environmental justice.  (description from the website)

  • "Lie Down For America: How the Republican Party sows ruin on the Great Plains."
Essay by Thomas Frank in Harper's Magazine, April 2004, on the success of Republicans in turning the Midwest, a stronghold of American radicalism a century ago, into Bush-voting 'red states,' despite the damage Republican policies have inflicted on the region. In the same issue of Harper's: "Welcome to the Machine: A citizen's guide to hacking the 2004 election", a 'primer' on how voting machines will be used to manipulate the next election.
