SUPPORT GREENSWEEK!
In March, the Green Party's national Media Committee began to publish
Greensweek again, but it takes a lot of time and work to compile, edit,
and distribute. We also want to expand Greensweek so it eventually becomes
an in-demand national source for Green, progressive, and eco news. We need
your help to do this! Please send a donation to the Green Party of the
United States -- and include a note mentioning that you saw the Greensweek
appeal. Donate

READ THE LIST of Green Party and other events
scheduled for the Global Day of Protest on Saturday, March 19, the 2-year
anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq, to take place in Fayetteville,
North Carolina and elsewhere around the US, under Upcoming Events below.
COOL GREEN PARTY MERCHANDISE The Peace Action
Committee and the Merchandise Committee have announced Green Party 'Vote
Peace' flags, great for anti-war actions and peace rallies, or for bikes
and backpacks. The pennant style flags say 'Vote Peace' on one side and
'Green Party' on the other, with the Earthflower logo, and are green, with
white lettering and include the union and recycling bugs. Size: 11"
high, 18" each side. Prices: 1 for $4; 5 for $15; 25 for $40; 50 for
$50.

CALIFORNIA In California elections on March 8, Green
candidates made a strong showing in Pasadena, where School Board candidate
Victor Gonzalez pulled almost 38% of the vote in his first run for public
office. Congressional candidate Pat Driscoll in Sacramento strategically
allied with other progressives in an attempt to force a runoff, but the
former incumbent's widow was heavily financed in the heavily Democratic
district and won an outright majority to take the seat. In Arcata, Greens
held onto our three of five seat majority on the City Council but
candidate Greg Allen was unable to make it four of five. California Greens
are now focused on electing Aimee Allison to the Oakland City Council in a
special all-postal election ending May 17.
http://www.cagreens.org
CALIFORNIA Community leader and anti-war activist
Aimee Allison has entered the race for Oakland's District 2 City Council
seat. Allison, an African-American military veteran and 12-year resident
of Oakland, was urged to run for the District 2 seat by a coalition of
neighborhood activists, union members, and Green Party members because of
her background as a teacher, non-profit business consultant, and housing
advocate. As a medic in the Army Reserves, she took a public stand against
the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and received an honorable discharge as a
conscientious objector. Allison is running on a platform of responsible
government that emphasizes community-based economics over big moneyed
interests.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA Green Party political director
Brent McMillan spoke on a panel, along representatives of the Democratic
and Republican parties, NAACP, Women's Voices Women Vote (Tides Center)
and others, on absentee ballots and other electoral topics at Howard
University in Washington, DC on March 9. Notable during the panel was the
frustration of many Howard students and others with the failure of most
Democrats to challenge the voting irregularities in Ohio and Florida in
2004, especially John Kerry's immediate concession and refusal to use his
campaign warchest leftovers to support the recount (which was initiated by
Green presidential nominee David Cobb in Ohio and New Mexico). Black
Caucus Greens, DC Statehood Greens, Maryland Greens, and national party
reps participated in an expo after the panel.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA David Schwartzman, Tax &
Budget Coordinator and Co-Chair of Legislative Agenda Committee of the DC
Statehood Green Party, testified before a DC Council committee on Bill
16-35, 'The Standard Deduction And Personal Exemption Coupling Act of
2005' on March 14. Schwartzman urged passage, but listed ways the bill
should be supplemented by legislation that guarantees increased future
revenues and measures that make overall DC tax structure truly
progressive, noting that "DC millionaires have a huge taxable
income" that Council has refused to tap in order to fund DC's
distressed social services, health care, and education.

FLORIDA The Women Caucus of the Green Party of Florida
celebrated International Women's Day (March 8) in solidarity with Flor de
Maria Hurtado Valdez, Secretary General of the Green Alternative Party of
Peru and target of a recent unsuccessful assassination attempt (see the
International item below), and sent requests that the government of Peru
offer its protective umbrella to Flor, to the Indigenous population, and
to the endangered forests of the Amazon.

MAINE The Legislative Committee responsible for the
bad bill requiring petition signature gatherers to be 25 feet from the
polls has responded to public pressure, including that of many Greens, and
reversed its position, voting the bill LD 374 "ought not to
pass" out of committee yesterday March 14.

MINNESOTA The Green Party of Minnesota has joined a
coalition of groups opposing the upcoming annual seal hunt in Newfoundland
and Labrador, Canada. As part of a coordinated International Day of
Action, a demonstration will be held at the Canadian Consulate in downtown
Minneapolis (701 Fourth Avenue S) at noon on March 15. A letter signed by
the GPMN and other local groups will be hand-delivered to the Consul
General. Minnesota Greens also support US Senate Resolution 33, sponsored
by Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), urging Canada to end the commercial seal hunt.
The party calls on Senators Dayton and Coleman to join the other 15
senators co-sponsoring this multi-partisan resolution.

NEW YORK On March 14, Mayor Jason West of New Paltz
addressed the Ulster County Charter Commission, calling for major
democratic reforms in Ulster County. This public hearing of the Charter
Commission was rescheduled from the February 21 because of snow. The March
14 meeting took place on the campus of Ulster County Community College in
Stone Ridge. Mayor West, speaking on behalf of the Green Party,
recommended Proportional Representation (PR) and Instant Runoff Voting (IRV).

OHIO/NATIONAL Blair Bobier, media director for the
2004 Cobb/LaMarche campaign, which initiated the Ohio recount, blasted the
suggestion by Ohio's Republican Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell
that he would need to take depositions from John Kerry and John Edwards as
part of the Ohio recount litigation. Blackwell has refused to be deposed
himself about the Ohio election, has refused to appear before Congress,
and has refused to answer questions from members of the House Judiciary
Committee who have been investigating allegations of election fraud. The
report by the House Judiciary Committee's Democratic staff on the Ohio
election and recount states that "there were massive and
unprecedented voter irregularities and anomalies in Ohio. In many cases
these irregularities were caused by intentional misconduct and illegal
behavior, much of it involving... Blackwell, the co-chair of the
Bush-Cheney campaign in Ohio."
http://www.votecobb.org (includes
the report by the House Judiciary Committee's Democratic staff)
RHODE ISLAND Jeff Toste, 2004 Green candidate for
Rhode Island State Senate, has filed a complaint with the state Board of
Elections charging that poll workers and police unevenly enforced the ban
on campaigning within 50 feet of a polling place, failed to follow
campaign law inside the polls, and tore down his signs. Toste has called
for better training and competency tests for poll workers, training for
police, and boundaries, and is meeting with the Providence Board of
Canvassers.

VERMONT Burlington Vermont voted overwhelmingly
(65.2%) to bring US troops home now, in a referendum on Question 7, which
was supported by Greens: "Shall the voters of the City of Burlington
advise the President and Congress that Burlington and its citizens
strongly support the men and women serving in the United States Armed
Forces in Iraq and believe that the best way to support them is to bring
them home now?" Burlington also adopted instant runoff voting for
future mayoral elections by a landslide.

WISCONSIN The Wisconsin Green Party called Senate Bill
46 inadequate to provide for public financing of campaigns and for full
disclosure for soft money ads. "The bill currently does not require
that those placing campaign ads reveal their funding sources, and its
provision to counter soft-money ads is so inadequately funded as to ensure
that it will be ineffective," said Brenda Konkel, Madison City
Council President (Green). The Wisconsin Green Party signed on to
Wisconsin Democracy Campaign's Power to the Voter, a 5-point reform
agenda, which includes Truth in campaigning and Voter-owned elections. In
January, the Wisconsin Green Party issued a statement in support of the
People's Legislature, and is working with this non-partisan effort to
reform Wisconsin's government so that it belongs to the people of
Wisconsin rather than to special interests.

WISCONSIN The Wisconsin Green Party has declared its
support for more than 30 students, professors, and teaching assistants
throughout the University of Wisconsin system who are undertaking a
three-day hunger strike in protest of Governor Doyle's recent budget
proposal. Students and staff at UW-Madison, UW-Eau Claire, and UW-LaCrosse,
including several Wisconsin Greens, are participating in the strike, which
began on March 7 at 10 am and concluded on March 10 at 10 am. "The
purpose of this strike is to demand a tuition rollback to 2003 levels,
after the state government hiked tuition $1400 a year over a two year
period," said Bill Anderson, an undergraduate at UW-Madison, and 2nd
Congressional District representative to the Wisconsin Green Party
Coordinating Council. "The University is gradually being privatized,
and turned into a business corporation," said Alex Gallagher, an
undergraduate at UW-Madison.

WISCONSIN The Wisconsin Green Party has endorsed the
Women's Health Day of Action, to be held on March 15 in Madison. Greens
are participating in the event. The Day of Action was organized by Planned
Parenthood & Stand Up for Women's Health to promote family planning,
reproductive rights, and access to affordable health care. The day
includes speakers, workshops, opportunities to meet with legislators, and
a march to the Capitol. "These next four years will be very critical
for women's reproductive rights," said Kathy Sommers, Chair of the
Greater Milwaukee Green Party Women's Caucus. "With judicial
retirements coming up on the Supreme Court, and Bush's advocacy of
abstinence as the main form of birth control, women's health could be back
in the Dark Ages very shortly. We women need to keep the pressure on all
our legislators -- state, federal, Green, Democrat, Republican and
Libertarian -- to remind them that women are a part of 'We the people...'
and that our reproductive health is very important to us."

Write a letter to the editor, article, or guest op-ed
column submission -- and show Green leadership on important issues!
In the last issue of Greensweek, we sent a list of talking points on
President Bush's Social Security Heist. In this issue, we're keeping the
same theme, but instead of talking points we have four sample letters
below for you to adapt and send to newspapers, news web sites, etc. If you
write your own letter, keep it short and focused -- five or six sentences
are ideal -- and be sure to mention the Green Party. Op-ed columns and
articles can be longer and more comprehensive.
Post your letter, column, etc. on e-mail discussion lists for other Greens
to read. Notify the Media Committee <mclarty@greens.org>
if your submission gets published, so we can circulate and archive it.
If you know a radio station that welcomes 'guest editorials' from
listeners, you can use one or more of the letters as the basis for radio
commentary. Jill Bussiere of Wisconsin informs us that she recorded a
two-minute Green commentary on Social Security for broadcast 20-24 times
over two days on a local station.
Here's an excellent web page on Social Security and the Bush plan: http://prorev.com/socsec.htm
SAMPLE LETTERS
(Edit and put into your own words if you prefer)
SAMPLE LETTER #1
To the Editor,
Before Social Security, tens of millions of working
Americans faced poverty in their senior years. This will happen again if
President Bush's privatization scheme destroys Social Security.
The President claims the current system will go broke
by 2042. In fact, the Congressional Budget Office predicts that, unless
the economy tanks, the current system will be able to pay 73% of benefits
in 2042 and remain solvent until 2052. Social Security actuaries forecast
that, without changes, the system will remain in the black and provide
full benefits through 2042. After 2042, its liabilities will amount to
less than 1% of the national income.
Proposed steps that could reverse a possible future
shortfall include lifting the current cap on Social Security, which right
now only taxes the first $90,000 of wages, and means testing, according to
which those who have a retirement income above a certain level would not
be eligible. Lowering payments to the rich is consistent with Social
Security's role as insurance for the elderly and other people in need.
As a member of the Green Party, I urge everyone who
cares about the the security of working people and well-being of older
Americans to send Congress a message: stop the Social Security Heist!
[Your name]
SAMPLE LETTER #2
To the Editor
In promoting his privatization plan, President Bush is
deceiving the American people about Social Security, just as his
administration deceived the American people with allegations about Iraqi
WMDs, Saddam Hussein's collusion with al-Qaeda, nuclear weapons materials,
and an 'imminent threat' to the US in order to justify invading Iraq.
The President Bush has claimed that African Americans
are getting shafted under the current Social Security system, because
black men have a shorter average life span and therefore receive fewer
benefits. But the shorter life span is a result of higher infant mortality
rates and more death in early years (which is why we also need national
health insurance).
In fact, African Americans receive on average more
from Social Security, and will face greater economic hardship if the
system is privatized. Accordiing to the Social Security Administration,
African Americans comprise 12% of the population, while 17% of Americans
who receive Social Security disability benefits are African American.
The Bush plan is a multi-billion-dollar gift to his
financial corporation supporters. As a member of the Green Party, I urge
everyone who cares about the the security of working people and well-being
of older Americans to send Congress a message: stop the Social Security
Heist!

SAMPLE LETTER #3
To the Editor
In promoting his privatization plan, President Bush is
deceiving the American people about Social Security, just as his
administration deceived the American people with allegations about Iraqi
WMDs, Saddam Hussein's collusion with al-Qaeda, nuclear weapons materials,
and an 'imminent threat' to the US in order to justify invading Iraq.
The goal of privatization is not to fix Social Security but to destroy it.
Dismantling Social Security has been a Republican dream for six decades.
Former House leader Dick Armey (R.-Tex.) recently endorsed ending it --
even though it has proved one of the most successful programs in U.S.
history. Think tanks with clout in the White House, like the Heritage
Foundaction and Cato Institute, have published papers on why and how
Social Security should be abolished -- recommending privatization to
achieve this goal.
As a member of the Green Party, I urge everyone who
cares about the the security of working people and well-being of older
Americans to send Congress a message: stop the Social Security Heist!

SAMPLE LETTER #4
To the Editor
Before Social Security, tens of millions of working
Americans faced poverty in their senior years. This will happen again if
President Bush's privatization scheme destroys Social Security.
The President claims that, under his plan, younger
Americans would be able to divert some of their Social Security payments
into private accounts "so you can build a nest egg for your own
future" -- but doesn't mention that their Social Security benefit
checks would thus be smaller.
He also Bush claims that investments in privatized
retirement accounts are guaranteed to increase. But the stock market is a
risk, and Wall Street investments are neither guaranteed to increase nor
insured against losses.
The Bush plan is a multi-billion-dollar gift to his
financial corporation supporters. It doesn't transfer 'ownership' from the
US government to private citizens, but to Wall Street -- to whichever
brokerage the citizen is investing through, with all the related fees and
risks. As a member of the Green Party, I urge everyone who cares about the
the security of working people and well-being of older Americans to send
Congress a message: stop the Social Security Heist!

'REAL ID Act', which would expand the government's ability to label people
terrorists, create a massive, linked federal database out of state

restrictions. The bill passed easily in the House and a sneaky rider was
added to grease its passage in the Senate. It's critical to mobilize now
to stop the REAL ID from coming to the Senate floor. As the USA Patriot

==> Tell Congress, once again, to leave Arctic

==> Tell Congress to stop FBI spying! Without

organizations even when there is no evidence of wrongdoing. This practice
is apparently spreading to police forces, which are generally
investigating environmental, political, and faith- based groups. Tell
Congress to pass legislation early in 2005 that will stop these abuses of
American civil liberties and require that the FBI and police forces act
only when they can present clear evidence to a court authority.
