GREENSWEEK!
The Green Party's national Media Committee is delighted to publish
Greensweek and we thank everyone who reads it and send us submissions. It’s
wonderful to see so much exciting Green political organizing happening
around the country. Our party is really growing and maturing. The Media
Committee's plan is to expand Greensweek so it eventually becomes an
in-demand national source for Green, progressive, and eco news. We want to
have an online version of Greensweek, including a blog, so you can express
your opinions and ideas too. But expanding Greensweek means raising money,
so we need your help! Please send a donation to the Green Party of the
United States -- and include a note mentioning that you saw the Greensweek
appeal.

BLACK CAUCUS On May 21, the Green Party Black Caucus, in a special
meeting, endorsed the special report "The Right to Vote Act! vs. The
Right to Vote Amendment?" prepared by the DC Statehood Green Party
Electoral College Task Force and the Douglass Institute of Government, as
well as a request to the national Green Party that Asa Gordon be invited

CALIFORNIA Santa Monica City Council member Kevin McKeown has announced
that while still supporting Green Party principles, he has re-registered
as "Declined to State" in protest over the Greens' failure to
take action against the financial malfeasance of a fellow party member.

CONNECTICUT The Green Party of Connecticut has joined other environmental
groups in condemning General Electric's latest attempt to paint itself as
an environmentally friendly company through its 'Ecomagination' ad
campaign. A leading proponent for the clean-up of the entire length of the
Housatonic River, Connecticut Greens have noted the continued PCB
pollution along the river was caused by GE. GE has effectively delayed
efforts to clean up the Housatonic for decades and has spent millions of
dollars more on public relations distorting the facts about PCBs in an
effort to convince the public that no action is necessary.

CONNECTICUT Miguel Angel Nieves, Green candidate for Mayor of New Britain,
has rescheduled his Taking Back New Britain walk, originally set for June
4. The new date is June 12 at 2:00 pm. Nieves is also organizing a radio
show on Super Max 990 AM, titled 'Contacto Con El Pueblo' ('Contact With
The Town'), to be broadcase Monday to Friday, 1 pm to 4 pm. It will begin
on June 13. 'Contacto Con El Pueblo' will feature music, live interviews,
news, town information, and lots of job postings. Listeners will be
invited to call in, share their problems, and advise other callers. Nieves
is seeking sponsors and offering spots; contact him at 860-832-8141 for
rates and further information.

safety net and improve the quality of life for all District residents.

restoration of DC General Hospital; more power for Advisory Neighborhood
Commissions; and a plan for Greening the District. The agenda project was

FLORIDA The Broward County Green Party joined a legal challenge to
ordinances recently enacted in Ft. Lauderdale limiting demonstrators at
the Organization of American States General Assembly meeting, June 4-7.
The OAS meets in Ft. Lauderdale from June 4-7, with participants from 34
nations. While Broward County Greens support international cooperation,
the OAS has been consistently unsuccessful in protecting environmental
degradation and human rights, and has supported trade policies that
undermine labor, local economies, regional environments, and political
self-determination. Religious, environmental, labor, and political groups
are planning peaceful demonstrations during the meeting. In an effort to
limit the size and effectiveness of these demonstrations, Ft. Lauderdale
recently enacted an ordinance that redefines a parade or political rally
as only eight people, bans common objects such as soda bottles and
marbles, and limits the size of signs and banners. Security officials also
plan to restrict the demonstrators to positions that are largely invisible
to the OAS delegates, further undermining our ability to be effective.
Broward County Greens are seeking to have the ordinance stricken as
unconstitutional. A coalition including attorneys from the National
Lawyers Guild Mass Defense Committee and the ACLU has filed the suit.

GEORGIA Elaine Brown announced her candidacy in the nonpartisan race for
Mayor of Brunswick, Georgia, held a press conference, and officially
opened her campaign headquarters on May 19 (Malcolm X's birthday).
"This is an opportunity to address contradictions that exist
throughout the country with respect to wealth and poverty, black and
white," Brown said. "I think Brunswick presents itself as an
opportunity not only for blacks, but for blacks and whites and other
people to recognize what we might be able to do on a larger scale."
Under the campaign slogan "Empowering the People! Sharing the
Wealth!" Brown says she wants to displace "the Confederate
establishment" (the current mayor is a Lt. Col. in the Sons of
Confederate Veterans) as much as the present administration wants to
remove the black and poor population of Brunswick under an economic plan
to gentrify Brunswick. Brown, the only woman to lead the Black Panther
Party, declared her intention to run for Mayor of Brunswick as a member of
the Green Party during a speech on April 23 at Howard University in
Washington, DC. Send a check made out to "Friends of Elaine Brown for
Mayor of Brunswick, Georgia" to this address: Elaine Brown 129 Altama
Connector #107 Brunswick, GA 31525 (Include a note with your name,
occupation, address, and amount donated along with the check, to comply
with election laws.).

MAINE The Attorney General's prosecution of Fred Dolgon, the state's
strongest case, ended after a two-day bench trial. Three of the felony
charges were dismissed. Fred was convicted of the misdemeanor of
"pointing" to the place on the absentee ballot where the elderly
voter wanted to make her mark. The judge reluctantly convicted based on
the state statute (the witness and Fred admitted he pointed, but she told
him who she was voting for). The judge sentenced Fred to 200 hours of
community service, much less than the state prosecutor wanted.

*MINNESOTA Farheen Hakeem, the Green mayoral candidate in Minneapolis,
spoke at the Minnesota Women's Political Conference Breakfast and at the
following candidates' debate between herself, the incumbent Democratic
mayor, and a Democratic county commissioner who will both be in the race
through the primary with Farheen in September, since as the Democrats
failed to endorse a candidate. This gives Farheen an opening as incumbent
Rybak and Democratic challenger McLaughlin will split the Democratic vote
and their is unlikely to be any other candidates in the race for mayor.
Both Greens on Minneapolis City Council, Natalie Johnson Lee and Dean
Zimmermann have been suffered redistricting and gerrymandering, but may
still win reelection. Green candidate Cam Gordon is considered the
frontrunner in a tight race for the city council seat he narrowly lost in
2001, and he is facing a progressive Democrat who is a fairly well known
activist and wife to a state representative whose district partially
overlaps the ward. Annie Young is up for re-election for the at-large
(citywide) park board seat; her popularity is such that the Democrats only
endorsed two candidates for the three seats on the board. Minnesota Greens
say they have an embarrassment of riches in quality candidates, but need
more donations and volunteers.

NEW JERSEY Earl Gray, Chair of the Green Party of New Jersey, died on May
20, of pulmonary fibrosis. Earl joined the Greens in 1997; during the next
8 years he served as Monmouth County Coordinator, GPNJ Secretary,
Vice-Chair, acting Chair and Chair, as well as heading the GPNJ Policy
Committee from its formation as well as serving on the national Platform
and International Committees. He worked tirelessly for the Green Party
until the day of his death, reviewing new information on renewable energy
devices from his hospital bed. During his 2003 campaign for NJ Senate, he
gained notice both for his active campaign despite his failing health (he
required constant oxygen and campaigned with a portable oxygen tank in a
rollaround suitcase) and for embodying Green values in his campaign
conduct. Earl held a doctorate in history from Rutgers University and did
post-graduate study with Arnold Toynbee. He was a history professor before
working as a technical writer for a computer company. Following his 1991
retirement, he worked as a school-bus driver and as a manager of a
nonprofit boarding house for the homeless in Red Bank. Earl will be missed
by Green colleagues everywhere.

NEW YORK NY Greens are calling for support for Mayor Jason West of New
Paltz, who challenged New York law by attempting to marry gay couples last
year and will now face trial, according to a May 27 ruling from the
state's highest court. West, a Green Party member, faces 24 misdemeanor
counts of violating the state's domestic relations law by marrying couples
without licenses in late February 2004. He faces fines and up to a year in
jail if convicted. West has maintained he was upholding the gay couples'
constitutional rights to equal protection, and thus his oath of office, by
allowing them to wed in the Hudson Valley college town in late February
2004. But top state officials, including Gov. Pataki and Attorney General
Eliot Spitzer, claim same-sex ceremonies violate state law.

NEW YORK The New York State Green Party has announced its support for the
Worlds AIDS Campaign. This year's Worlds AIDS Day (December 1) campaign is
'Women, Girls, HIV and AIDS''. . This year's World AIDS Campaign explores
how gender inequality fuels the AIDS epidemic, and is conceived to
accelerate the global response to HIV and AIDS by encouraging people to
address female vulnerability to HIV.

NORTH CAROLINA The North Carolina House voted in favor last week of a bill
that would allow some counties to begin using instant-runoff voting (IRV)
in primaries. The IRV bill was introduced by Rep. Paul Luebke of Durham
and was supported by Democracy North Carolina and the North Carolina Green
Party, among others. The bill passed on May 18 by a bipartisan vote of
79-32. "This was such a surprise," said Elena Everett, chair of
the state Green Party. "We didn't expect this bill to come up for a
vote in the House this year. This is such important legislation. It could
save the state millions of dollars in election years and encourage more
democratic participation in government."

WISCONSIN The Wisconsin Green Party announced today that it will work with
citizens across the state to place an advisory referendum on as many local
ballots as possible in next spring's election asking voters the question,
"Should the United States begin an immediate, phased withdrawal of
its troops from Iraq?" Jeff Peterson, the Green Party's candidate for
lieutenant governor in 2004, will coordinate efforts around the state,
most of which will involve convincing county boards to give their
constituents the opportunity to weigh in on the war. "We
intentionally crafted a referendum that is neutral in its language,"
said Peterson. "We're not trying to put local elected officials on
the spot by forcing them to take a stand on the war. We just think that,
after two years, it would be the democratic thing to do to allow average
citizens to weigh in on the Iraq situation."

WISCONSIN The Wisconsin Green Party has announced its support for Madison
Alderman Austin King's filing of a nine-page complaint with Attorney
General Peggy Lautenschlager, along with a mountain of evidence. The
complaint accuses Assembly Speaker Gard, Senate Majority Leader Schultz,
and Governor Doyle of having a quid pro quo agreement whereby Governor
Doyle would sign a municipal minimum wage preemption bill, AB 49, in
exchange for legislative acceptance of a rule increasing the state minimum
wage. Such backroom dealing is a direct violation of Wisconsin State
Statutes 13.06, which classifies the commission of such an act as a Class
I Felony. The Wisconsin Green Party called for a thorough investigation of
his allegations, along with the effective punishment of any state elected
officials who broke the law. "The deal worked out between Doyle, Gard,
and Schultz isn't just bad for low-wage workers, it's illegal. It's clear
that Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce brokered a deal between the
Governor and the Republican leadership, and it's time for Wisconsin's
Attorney General to clean house," said Jill Busierre, Co-Chair of the
Wisconsin Green Party.

NATIONAL Greens accused Democrats are supporting some of the most damaging
and extreme agenda of the Republican Party, citing the unanimous Senate

presidential candidate.

NATIONAL Green Party leaders called on Congress to begin immediate and
far-reaching investigations of major abuses by the Pentagon and urged the
removal of Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, citing: (1) Evidence of torture
and abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib in Iraq, in Afghanistan, in
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and abuse at facilities in the U.S., especially at
the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York; (2) Recent
reports that the Pentagon is unable to account for more than a trillion
dollars in financial transactions and missing equpment; $8.8 billion in
Iraqi oil sales unaccounted for in a 2005 audit, according to the Special

NATIONAL Learn the Art of Running for Office Run for Office as a Green!
221 Green officeholders in 27 states are hard at work, creating public
policy on important issues including civil rights, a healthy environment,
a living wage, alternative voting systems, and peace. The Coordinated
Campaign Committee has helped many individual Green campaigns: Bob
Jacobson, Vice-Chair of the Hawai'i County Council was re-elected last
year, and says he knows that the early contributions from the national
party contributed to his victory. To support the growth of the Green Party
in 2005, 2006, and beyond, the Coordinated Campaign Committee is pursuing
programs to increase the number of Green officeholders nationwide.
Strategies include targeting specific campaigns (based on written
applications) and providing those campaigns with matching funds or other
support; maintaining a campaign manual (available for download from <http://www.gp.org/committees/campaign/manual.html>);
helping states recruit candidates; assist with regional campaign training
schools; and much more. Special resources will be available for
congressional campaigns and strong local campaigns. We especially
encourage people who are underrepresented in elective office to consider
running. We are also looking for people to work with these candidates as
campaign coordinators, managers, and other campaign volunteers. If you're
interested in learning the art of running for office, call the CCC's
Campaign Hotline phone number: 202-319-7194, or visit the Coordinated
Campaign Committee's websites for a wealth of campaign info <http://www.gp.org/committees/campaign>.

==> Urge Congress to pass The Torture Outsourcing Prevention Act, HR
952. The practice of sending detainees to other countries where they can

agree that alternative energy is practicable and economic. Both houses
