NATIONAL GREEN PARTY MEETING IN TULSA Greens gathered
in Tulsa for the national meeting of the Green Party of the United States,
July 21-24. The Green Party of Oklahoma, the most recent affiliate of the
Green Party of the United States, faces ballot access rules that co-chair
Rachel Jackson calls "among the most restrictive in the
country." Co-chair James Branum noted that, after a Friday evening
fundraising event in connection with the national meeting, the Green Party
of Oklahoma has a substantial warchest, unlike the Oklahoma Democratic
Party, which is now in debt. Mr. Branum noted Green participation in
Oklahomans for Ballot Access Reform <http://www.okballotchoice.org>.
Press conference announcements during the meeting:
Marc Sanson, co-chair of the national party, noted
that 13 Greens have already been elected to public office so far in 2005.
The early 2005 victories raises the national total to 221 Greens holding
elected office in 27 states and the District of Columbia. Brent McMillan,
national political director of the Green Party, said that he anticipates a
large increase in the number of Greens running for office in the 2006
midterm election, in part a result of the party's Campaign Schools. The
Campaign Schools, held in various states and regions throughout the US,
offer training for Green candidates and campaign organizers.
Pat LaMarche, 2004 Green nominee for Vice President,
announced Maine's record number of Green registrants. 24,155 Maine voters
were reported registered Green in November, 2004, up 50% from 16,169 Green
registrants in November, 2002. At 2.3%, the 2004 number is the highest per
capita percentage of registered Greens in any state.
Jeff Peterson discussed a statewide voter referendum,
introduced by the Wisconsin Green Party, calling for immediate troop
withdrawal from Iraq <http://www.wisconsingreenparty.org/iraqreferendum/>
Wisconsin Greens intend to place the nonbinding advisory referendum on the
ballot in a spring 2006 nonpartisan election. Wisconsin Greens are
encouraging other state Green Parties to launch similar efforts.
Rachel Jackson and Pat LaMarche announced an effort to
assist a Tulsa shelter for victims of domestic violence, recalling
LaMarche's Left Out Tour during her 2004 vice presidential campaign, in
which she undertook an unprecedented two-week journey in September and
October, 2004, spending nights in homeless and domestic violence shelters
across the US to draw attention to those left out of the election year
debate -- the homeless, victims of domestic abuse, people without health
insurance, and the working poor -- and to collect donations of essential
items for homeless shelters.
Rebecca Rotzler, Deputy Mayor of New Paltz, New York,
described her town's recently introduced Affordable Housing Task Force and
legislative mandate to set aside a portion of any new development for
affordable housing. Ms. Rotzler noted that the legislation, which she
called a "project for the people" dedicated to housing
assistance for low-income residents, has been used a model by other
municipalities in New York.
Georgia Green Nan Garrett discussed former Black
Panthers leader Elaine Brown's campaign for Mayor of Brunswick, Georgia
<http://www.elainebrown.org>, noting that Brown's candidacy was
recently endorsed by Rev. Al Sharpton, who plans to appear at a fundraiser
for the campaign in Brunswick on August 6. Brown has gained a large base
of volunteers, including longshoremen, in a campaign focusing on
saving Brunswick's majority low-income African American population from
eviction to make way for the 'Blueprint Brunswick' development plan.
Blueprint Brunswick, promoted by corporate developers and Republican and
Democratic politicians, is a land use scheme based on eminent domain for
private taking similar to one recently approved by the Supreme Court;
Greens strongly opposed the court's decision
Major motions: Three motions submitted by members of
Greens for Democracy and Independence, which includes Greens from several
states, were defeated after lengthy floor debate.
New national officers: The party's National Committee
elected the new officers on Sunday morning, July 24. The new co-chairs,
who serve on the Green Party's steering committee, are Pat LaMarche
(Maine) and Rebecca Rotzler (New York). Steve Kramer (Maryland) was
reelected co-chair. Holly Hart (Iowa) was elected secretary of the
national party. They join sitting co-chairs Gwen Wages (Mississippi), Marc
Sanson (Illinois), and Jody Haug (Washington) and treasurer Jake Schneider
(Wisconsin), who were elected in 2004. One seat was left vacant in the
election and will be filled through a runoff. (Steering committee terms
are two years; elections are staggered, with half the committee elected
every year.) LaMarche ran for Governor of Maine in 1998 and was nominated
for Vice President of the United States in 2004. Rotzler, who is a Yupik
Eskimo and originally from Alaska, is Deputy Mayor of New Paltz, New York
and serves as co-chair of the Green Party's Peace Action Committee. Hart
currently serves as co-chair of the Green Party's Platform Committee and
is the National Women's Caucus delegate to the Green Party's National
Committee. It was announced that Nancy Allen (Maine) stepped down from her
position as one of two Media Coordinators for the Green Party. Starlene
Rankin (Lavender Greens, California) replaces Ms. Allen, joining Scott
McLarty (District of Columbia).

LOUISIANA GREENS FILE FOR BALLOT STATUS After
surpassing the 1,000 registrations needed for major party status, the
Green Party of Louisiana filed qualification papers on August 8 with the
Secretary of State in Baton Rouge to become Louisiana's newest major
party. The Green Party is now the fastest-growing party in the states, and
is the first qualified progressive party on Lousiana ballot since 1916.

GREENS TAKE OFFICE IN TEXAS On May 7, two elections
resulted in Greens in public office. David Lanman, a Texas Green, was
elected to Mayor of Marfa with 53% of the vote or 304 votes. Although Bob
Brewer lost his bid for the Ward 5 seat on the Alpine City Council (48%
for 67 votes), the winner resigned a month later and Brewer was appointed
to the open seat.

NEW SITE TRACKS GREEN REGISTRATION, BALLOT STATUS A
new web site tracking "Green Growth Green Party Voter Registration
& Ballot Status History" has been launched. The site will provide
comprehensive compilation and analysis of Green voter registration totals,
1986 to the present, and Green Party state ballot status efforts, 1988 to
the present. It features a data base containing every Green voter
registration total available, from every state government, in every state
where it has been possible to register Green (and where the government has
tracked the number.) The site contains approximately 850 separate data
entries of Green voter registration, dating back to the first Greens
registered in the nation, in California in 1986. Accompanying this effort
is a comprehensive history of the ballot qualification efforts in every
state in which a Green Party has attempted to achieve ballot status. This
is the first time both of kinds of information have been tracked in a
comprehensive way and featured in a single place.

CALIFORNIA (1) California Greens, in a July 20
release, said that the recent conviction of San Diego council members for
trading political favors for campaign contributions from special interests
should ignite renewed public concern regarding immediate campaign reform.
The Green Party, whose candidates do not accept contributions from
business groups or corporations, advocates public financing of elections,
as well as limits on campaign spending as a way of reducing the influence
of business interests, and empowering the public interest in the election
process. (2) The Green Party of California said on July 22 praised a
decision by a Superior Court judge to toss a key proposition - the
legislative redistricting plan - from the November Special Election,
calling it an abuse of power exhibited by the governor and his business
cronies. (3) On August 3, the Green Party of California mourned the loss
of another 14 Americans on that day, and at least 21 since the day before
in the war in Iraq, and said that the cost of war not only takes human
lives in the war zone, but in California. Citing statistics that indicate
more than $26 billion could have been spent on human needs in California,
many of them life-saving, California Greens urged local governments to
send a clear message to Congress and the Bush Administration that the US
should withdraw immediately from Iraq.

CONNECTICUT (1) Connecticut Greens supported a bill
(SB 55) signed into law on July 1, 2005 by Connecticut Republican Governor
Rell that safeguards Connecticut's elections and prevents the purchase of
unverifiable paperless e-voting machines. The Green Party of Connecticut
was one of the first lead groups to educate the state, and even the nation
on the need for veriable voting, and formed a coalition in 2002 called CT
V.O.T.E.R. (Voter Opportunity Through Election Reform) to worked with
other third parties in the state on problems caused by unverifiable voting
and other election reform issues. (2) The New Britan Green Party announced
a new web page: <http://www.hostinghelps.com/nbgreen>. (3) The
Connecticut Greens plan to run North Stamford resident and
environmentalist Darek Shapiro for mayor of Stamford. Shapiro is the
founder of the 2010 Clean Energy Committee, which lobbied the Board of
Representatives to recently pass legislation agreeing to purchase 20
percent of the municipality's energy from clean sources by 2010. Since the
Green Party did not run a candidate for Stamford's last mayoral race in
2001, Shapiro files petitions as an unaffiliated candidate.

(4) Bill C. Davis has announced his run for the Fifth District
congressional seat. Davis, a professional playwright, doesn't intend to
give campaign speeches. Instead, he plans to recruit actors and produce
performances of the "Green Dialogues," a series of short plays
he's writing about political issues.

GEORGIA Rev. Al Sharpton held a press conference in
Brunswick, Georgia and launched his two-day, whirlwind tour of Georgia's
Golden Isles in support of Elaine Brown's campaign for mayor of Brunswick.
Sharpton endorsed Brown on his syndicated radio program "Sharptalk"
in July, when Brown was a guest and said Brown's candidacy held a certain
irony in that she was a "daughter of the Movement," referencing
her longtime activism and former leadership of the Black Panthers, who was
challenging an establishment represented by the current mayor, a Lt. Col.
in the Sons of Confederate Veterans. (See also the report from the Tulsa
meeting, above.)

MAINE On July 12 in York County Superior Court, Ben
Chipman, the Green Party's Political Coordinator and one-time Legislative
Aide to Representative John Eder was found innocent of of charges that he
intimidated a voter while collecting absentee ballots in a February 2004
special election for a vacated legislative seat in Biddeford.

MINNESOTA The Green Party of Minnesota is running two
Green women candidates: Elizabeth Dickinson for Mayor of St. Paul and
Farheen Hakeem for Mayor of Minneapolis. Minnesota Greens are encouraging
Greens and friends across the US to help out with volunteers and donations
in the countdown to the primary. Correction: In the last issue of
Greensweek, Elizabeth Dickinson was identified as the former
"political director" for the Minnesota AIDS project. In fact,
Dickinson was a lobbyist with MAP, not the political director.

WISCONSIN (1) Wisconsin Greens called for partnership
benefits for same sex couples, after Cottage Grove, Green Bay, Watertown,
Caledonia, Hobart, Oostburg, and school boards in New Berlin and Raymond
joined together to fight a lawsuit filed by the ACLU seeking health
benefits for partners of gay state employees. "We sympathize with
businesses and local governments who are feeling the immense pressures of
having to bear the costs of our inadequate and inefficient private health
care system," said Jill Bussiere, Co-Chair of the Wisconsin Green
Party. "At the same time, they should recognize that the costs to
provide the benefits to gay and lesbian couples are far less than one
percent of health care expenses. We absolutely support the right for
domestic partners to receive the same benefits as their married
co-workers, regardless of their sexual orientation. Instead of
discriminating against gays and lesbians, a better solution would be
universal health care, thus ensuring that all citizens would be adequately
cared for." (2) Listen to former Green Party co-chair Ben Manski talk
about the Patriot Act on Wisconsin Public Radio program on July 22
