HURRICANE KATRINA Louisiana Greens, especially in New
Orleans, struggled to account for their members and bring relief to
devastated areas in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Greens expressed
dismay and anger at the failure of the federal government (especially
President Bush), FEMA, and the National Guard to heed warnings of an
impending disaster or provide rescue and aid, especially to New Orleans
poor and majority African American residents. Greens noted the connection
between increasingly destructive hurricanes and rising ocean temperatures
(a result of global warming), and committed themselves to helping rebuild
New Orleans according to sustainable and ecological principles. (A few
weeks before the hurricane, the Green Party of Louisiana became the
state's newest qualified political party; more below.) Leenie Halbert and
Andrea Garland (both from New Orleans) and Romi Elnagar (Baton Rouge) kept
Greens across the US informed about those party members who evacuated and
those who stayed in New Orleans. Malik Rahim, Mike Howell, and others have
resisted forced evacuation, stayed in New Orleans, and continued to help
neighbors in need. Rahim, a Black Panthers veteran and Green who recently
ran for New Orleans City Council, stayed at his home in the Algiers
neighborhood (one of the few areas not flooded) and did several radio
interviews (listen to one at <http://radio.indymedia.org/uploads/lotus-malik-katrina.mp3>).
His article "This is criminal" has been widely published
and can be read at <http://www.gp.org/press/states/la_2005_09_03.shtml>.
Rahim is organizing 'Rebuild Green' to help get supplies and other aid to
people; donations are urgently needed. Call 415-575-5555; a website will
be up soon. http://www.lagreens.org
Mississippi: Gwen Wages <gwen.wages@gmail.com>,
Mississippi Green and national co-chair of the Green Party, writes
"The Green Party of Lee County (MS) is in NE MS and is stable. We are
discussing being the Green Clearing house for information and humanitarian
aid. We have a bank account, website, gasoline, even offers of homes (from
Greens) for the displaced from around the US. We can mobilize readily
being in the center, 5 hours to 1 day drive from New Orleans, and MS, AL ,
and Fl coast. We also know a few back roads [that] FEMA and other non
locals seem to be ignoring...." http://www.greenpartyms.org
On September 4, the Peace Action Committee approved
the following statement, in response to President Bush's refusal of aid
from some nations: "The Green Party Peace Action Committe (GPAX)
urges the Bush Administration to accept all offers of hurricane relief and
aid, from all foreign countries including Cuba and Venezuela. Green Party
members are urged to contact their elected officials and urge them to
support this broad approach to assisting those in need during this
critical time."

CAMP CASEY Andrea Garland (Louisiana), Rebecca Rotzler
(Deputy Mayor of New Paltz, New York and national Green Part co-chair),
and other Greens joined Cindy Sheehan for her antiwar protest vigil at
Camp Casey near President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas in August. The
Wisconsin Green Party, which launched the state's 'Bring the troops home
now' referendum (see Wisconsin item below), endorsed the Camp Casey
Caravan, which included a stop in Madison.

OHIO RECOUNT NEWS On Tuesday, August 30, a federal
district judge set a trial date for the Green Party's Ohio Recount lawsuit
and indictments were handed down against two Cuyahoga County elections
officials for their roles in the bungled election audit. Judge James Carr
set the trial date for August 22, 2006. The lawsuit was initiated by Green
Party presidential candidate David Cobb and his Libertarian counterpart,
Michael Badnarik.

ALASKA Alaskans now have a wider choice of candidates
during the primary election, thanks to an August 15 Alaska Supreme Court
ruling allowing multiple political parties to appear on a single ballot.
The ruling does not force the Republican Party to be on a common ballot
with all the other political parties, but all political parties who wish
to be on one common ballot can now do so. One likely scenario would be to
have a Republican only ballot and an everyone else ballot. Green Party
Elections advisory Jim Sykes said, "We wouldwelcome the
Republicans back to a blanket ballot like we had prior to 1994 in order to
give Alaskans the full range of choices we used to have. If the
Republicans still want to restrict the choices Alaskans make at the
primary ballot, then they can go their own way."

CALIFORNIA 1) The Green Party of California decried
the continuing attacks on working people by the governor after union
leaders were arrested in a state building here this week as they attempted
to distribute newsletters to employees at the state Department of
Transportation. "We stand with our brothers and sisters in organized
labor," said Tom Bolema, a teacher and member of the California State
Employees Union, adding, "The governor represents big business
special interests, and those interests want to see organized labor
die." 2) The Green Party of California affirmed its full support for
legislation designed to boost alternative energy resources, the
"Million Solar Roofs Initiative," calling green energy a human
right. The bill's goal is to place one million solar energy systems on new
and existing residential and commercial structures in 10 years, and solar
energy systems on 50% of the new home developments in 13 years. New home
buyers would be able to choose solar energy as an option, with the help of
a $5,000 state tax credit. Greens have praised the bill since its
inception, saying it was long overdue and would help wean the state from
heavily polluting, oil-dependent electric energy generation.

FLORIDA Local Green Party leader Mark Kamleiter was
quoted in the St. Petersburg Times, August 11, 2005, following a press
conference by the peace group, St. Pete for Peace. Kamleiter, co-chair of
the Green Party of Pinellas County was cited in the article and
accompanying photo caption, as an attorney with the local ACLU.
Pinellas Greens, in coalition with a large number of local activist
groups, have repeatedly protested efforts of the local city government to
ban war protests outside an entertainment complex. Kamleiter has taken a
lead role in these efforts, writing a 40 + page legal memorandum submitted
to the city council by the ACLU and the Green Party that demonstrated the
legal right of protesters to exercise their free speech on the public
sidewalks. Kamleiter will represent at least of two of the protesters and
is researching the matter for the ACLU, which is considering a 1983 (Civil
Rights) Injunctive action.

GEORGIA Elaine Brown, Green candidate for mayor of
Brunswick, called for a 'new wave of Freedom Riders' to Come to Brunswick
to monitor the November election. Brown, former Black Panthers leader and
slated to become the first black and first woman mayor of Brunswick
denounced the recent approval of Georgia's new voting law by
the US Department of Justice, calling the Republican-backed
legislation (the 'Voter ID law') as racist and biased against black,
Latino, young, first-time, ex-felon, elderly, poor, and disabled voters.
"The last time photo ID was a standard for citizenship was in South
Africa under Apartheid," said Brown. "Indeed, this
Republican-backed ploy to intimidate and decimate the black vote recalls
the poll tax, the grandfather clause and the literacy test under Jim
Crow."

INDIANA Brown County Green Party Member Bill Stant has
been unanimously endorsed by the Illinois Green Party membership to be
their 2006 Secretary of State candidate. If a minor Party in Indiana gains
2% in the Secretary of State race, it is guaranteed a ballot line for 4
years.

LOUISIANA Pre-Katrina news: On August 8, the Green
Party of Louisiana became the state's newest qualified political party.
For the first time since 1916, when the Socialist party lost its
qualification, Louisianans will a qualified progressive party on the
ballots. Representatives from the Green Party of Louisiana turned in the
required fees and paperwork on August 8 in Baton Rouge at the
Elections Division of the Secretary of State. "The speed with which
we registered the required numbers of voters is yet another sign that the
people of Louisiana are looking for a strong voice for social justice and
the environment," said Leenie Halbert, who led the registration
drive.

MINNESOTA 1) A statement of unity was issued today by
the 5th Congressional District Green Party. "As a local party
organization, we are thrilled with the slate of candidates we have
endorsed. From seasoned incumbents to a young librarian up for Library
Board, the local Greens have come together to give the people of
Minneapolis a choice," says Stephen Eisenmenger, 5th Congressional
District Green Party Spokesperson. 2) In St. Paul, incumbent mayor Ryan
Kelly has raised $840,000 dollars, a lot of it coming from corporate and
business interest pacs and Republicans from around the country grateful to
the allegedly Democratic mayor for his support for the Bush campaign last
year. Green candidate Elizabeth Dickinson is elbow to elbow with Kelly at
the debates, and competing with him in the number of yard signs, and has
raised a total of $18,000. Dickinson entered the race late (the end of
June) so she could complete her commitments working at the state capital
on behalf of the Minnesota AIDS Project. Minnesota Greens encourage
donations to Dickinson's run at her campaign website.

NEW YORK 1) On August 29, New York City police
arrested Paul Zulkowitz at Camp Casey NYC in Union Square, despite the
fact that organizers had a valid permit. Zulkowitz, a member of the Green
Party's Peace Action Committee, has led the effort to maintain a presence
at Camp Casey NYC in solidarity with Cindy Sheehan. Green are calling the
arrest an attack on First Amendment rights as President Bush continues to
claim that he is waging war in order to spread democracy and freedom. 2)
Alice Green, Green Party candidate for Mayor of Albany, opposes a
proposal by the current administration to use land dedicated to the Pine
Bush Preserve to expand the Rapp Road landfill for another 20 years.
"This is another example of how the City doesn't have a system for
community input. The City needs to be much more aggressive in reducing the
amount of garbage it generates, starting with going to a volume-based
garbage disposal system and expanding recycling and composting. The City
should join communities like Seattle in adopting a Zero Waste approach
to garbage, seeking to, over time, eliminate the need for a
landfill," stated Green. Green's campaign has generated media
attention: when supporters filed the 2,700 petitions for her, five local
TV stations and NPR covered the event. Donations can be made to Friends of
Alice Green, PO Box 8481, Albany NY 12208. 3) All Green candidates in
Syracuse in the 2005 election year are rank and file union members: Howie
Hawkins for Mayor of Syracuse is a Teamster; Gary Bonaparte for 2nd
District Councilor is an Ironworker; Cosmo Fanizzi III for 16th District
County Legislator is a Carpenter; David Linton for 17th District County
Legislator is a retired Postal Worker. On Labor Day, the candidates issued
a statement, "Labor from a Rank and File Perspective," that
calls on "workers to declare their political independence from the
corporate-financed Democrats and Republicans."

OKLAHOMA A new participatory web site designed to
inform and inspire members of the Green Party debuted in August. Designed
by and for the grassroots of the growing third party, Green Commons <http://www.greencommons.org>
provides anyone who creates an account the ability to publish their own
news- or opinion-based content and to participate in an online
conversation with other registered members through community-moderated
comments. Green Commons will also promote Green candidates, their
platforms and highlight their accomplishments. Serena Blaiz created a web
ring called Green Bloggers <http://www.greenbloggers.org>
where Greens with personal blogs can link and promote each other's sites.

PENNSYLVANIA Michael Morrill was chosen on July 13 to fill an unexpired
term for West Reading Borough Council. Morrill was selected by the
incumbent council members in a 3-2 vote and was one of two new council
members chosen from a field of seven candidates. Kevin Conrad, a lifelong
resident of West Reading, is the other new council member. Morrill has
lived in the borough for four years. "I'm honored to be selected to
serve the residents of West Reading," said Morrill. "I'm even
more honored to be selected as a representative of the Green Party. This
may be the first time in the nation that a Green was chosen to fill an
unexpired elected seat. I intend to return the honor by using the Ten Key
Values of the Green Party as the basis for my service." Morrill's
term expires at the end of this year, after which he will run for a full
term as a Green on the November ballot. He will also appear on the
Democratic and Republican tickets, having won both parties' nominations by
write-in in the May primary. 2) The Green Party's state rep candidate for
the September 13 special election in the 200th District, Marlene Santoyo,
is a retired public school teacher and longtime peace activist; her
campaign has already received favorable press coverage. http://www.chestnuthilllocal.com/archives/080405/news2.html

UTAH 1) The Green Party of Utah has arranged a ride
board for people who intend to travel to antiwar rallies around the US on
September 24 http://www.gput.org/BB/viewforum.php?f=66>.2)
The Green Party helped organize a "End the Unjust War in Iraq"
rally on August 22 in response to a Bush visit. While Bush addressed the
plenary of the VFW National Convention, over 2000 people rallied against
his unjust war at a nearby park in downtown Salt Lake City.

WISCONSIN (1) Oshkosh residents may have their chance
to cast a ballot in support or opposition to withdrawing troops from Iraq
next spring. The Lake Winnebago Green Party and Winnebago Peace and
Justice Center kicked off a 60-day signature drive to get the following
referendum question on the spring 2006 election ballot: "Should the
United States begin an immediate withdrawal of its troops from Iraq,
beginning with the National Guard and Reserves?" Supporters must
gather at least 2,800 signatures from city residents, though they hope to
gather more than 3,000, before the Oshkosh Common Council will vote on
whether to add the referendum to the spring 2006 election ballot, Lake
Winnebago Green Party Chairman Ron Hardy said. The petitioners have
until October 29 to collect the needed signatures.
<http://www.wisinfo.com/northwestern/news/local/stories/local_22403366.shtml>
(2) The Libertarian Party of Wisconsin and the
Wisconsin Green Party have called for a demonstration of support for US
troops in Iraq by bringing them home as soon as possible. Both Green and
Libertarian Parties believe war should be waged only to defend the US, and
that the war on Iraq did not meet that condition, and both parties' 2004
presidential candidates proposed withdrawal of US troops. "We are
building a coalition of patriotic citizens to get a referendum on the
ballot so that Wisconsin voters have a chance to voice their
opinion," said Jeff Peterson, who is coordinating the referendum.
"Giving voters a voice about the war is an exercise in
democracy."

Texas. http://www.gp.org/press/pr_2005_08_10.shtml

an immediate pullout of troops from Iraq. "MoveOn has done an
admirable job of rallying people nationwide behind Cindy Sheehan's protest
vigil in Crawford, Texas," said Rebecca Rotzler, co-chair of the
Green Party of the United States and Deputy Mayor of New Paltz, New York.
"But MoveOn itself has undermined such efforts by refusing to endorse
an immediate end to the occupation of Iraq." MoveOn declined to
support a resolution from Rep. Lynn Woolsey stating that "thepresident
should develop and implement a plan to begin the immediate withdrawal of
United States Armed Forces from Iraq" and Rep. Barbara Lee's (D-Calif.)
bill to block the establishment of permanent US military bases in Iraq

-- August 25: Greens criticized plans announced by the Pentagon to
increase the number of US troops in Iraq, and reiterated the party's call
to begin withdrawing occupational forces from Iraq immediately. "We
agree with Cindy Sheehan -- the only legitimate way to support our troops
is to get them out of Iraq right now," said Andrea Garland, Louisiana
Green who joined Ms. Sheehan at her Camp Casey protest vigil in Crawford,
Texas. "This will be the demand of Greens participating in the
September 24 rallies in Washington, DC against the occupation." The
party's Peace Action Committee announced an online petition urging the
White House to end the occupation and supporting the Camp Casey vigil. http://www.gp.org/press/pr_2005_08_25.shtml
