OREGON -- At its October 7 business convention, members of the Pacific Green Party
of Oregon approved an updated version of the Party platform, the first
since 2000. The 2006 version is based upon the Green's Key Values of
Grassroots Democracy, Social Justice, Ecological Wisdom and Nonviolence,
with an additional plank devoted to "Realizing Our Values: A Sustainable
Economic Program for Oregon." PGP members were invited to submit comments and criticisms via the
website to the work as it progressed.
Much of the old platform was retained, with new language added to
reflect the current state of the planet and of society. The 2006 Preamble begins with a statement that "the Pacific Green
Party of Oregon recognizes that our state, our nation, and our world stand in crisis. This platform outlines a program of courage and
commitment to remedy this situation." This program includes returning policy-making and implementation to the most local level of government
capable of addressing a given issue; expanding the role of neighborhood
associations in municipal politics; and recruiting, training, and organizing
citizens so they can participate more fully and effectively in political processes; The updated platform is available for
viewing at www.pacificgreens.org.
The Pacific Green Party brings a genuine alternative political voice
to the political arena, based on principles of peace, harmony, diversity, community and responsibility. Together we can change our
course to create a better future for ourselves and for future generations.
