Bussiere slated to speak at Peace & Justice Festival

WISCONSIN -- Jill Bussiere, Wisconsin Green Party candidate for Senate District 1, will be a speaker at the Helfenstein Soup Council’s
Peace and Justice Festival this Sunday, September 24th at 1:30 PM at the Brown County Library. Her speech is entitled: “A
Green Vision for Peace – a Pragmatic Path”.
The festival starts at 12:30 PM, and will include storytelling, and the presentation of the Peace Owl Award to Dennis
Gonzalez, a storyteller and social justice activist for prisoner rights and prison reform. At 4:30 participants will gather at
Christa McAuliffe Park, 3100 Sitka Rd for a “Welcome Home” potluck, music, and fun.
Bussiere has long been active in the peace and justice community. She and her husband gave a year of service in the
Brethren Volunteer Service from 1980 to 1981, working to coordinate volunteers in cleaning up and repairing homes
throughout the country that were damaged by natural disasters. She and her sister Becky founded the Lansdowne Peace
Committee in their Pennsylvania hometown.. Since moving to Wisconsin, she has worked with members of the peace and
justice community throughout the Northeast.
This past year she was the Kewaunee County coordinator for the “Bring the Troops Home” April 2006 ballot initiative.
Bussiere embraces the principle of nonviolence, one of four pillars of the Wisconsin Green party, as an effective way to
address our nation’s problems. She is a member of the International Committee of the Green Party of the United States -
formed to network with organizations and movements working for global peace, social justice, human rights, and
environmentally sustainable communities.
The Helfenstein Soup Council (HSC), based in Green Bay, is in it's 13th year as an environmental social justice organization.
The HSC focusses on educating its members and the public about peace and justice issues, and environmental issues such
as renewable resources and energy. The Council networks with and supports other peace and justice groups.
