John Rensenbrink is a founding member of the Green Party of the United States and founder of the Maine Green Independent Party. He was the 1996 Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate from Maine, and was campaign manager for two Green gubernatorial candidates in Maine, Jonathan Carter (1994) and Pat La Marche (1998). He is founder and former chair of the Green Party International Committee, of which he is presently a member. He is also the representative of the Green Party of the United States to the Global Green Network, and chair of the recently created Policy and Strategy Committee of the Maine Green Independent Party.
Rensenbrink is currently president of the Green Horizon Foundation and co-editor of its journal, the Green Horizon Quarterly, now in its fourth year of publication. He is the author of two books on the U.S. Green Party: The Greens and the Politics of Transformation (1992); and Against All Odds: The Green Transformation of American Politics (1999).
Rensenbrink grew up in Pease Minnesota, one of 7 children. He worked on his family's dairy farm until he was 18 and took a correspondence course for his high school degree. He attended Calvin College (BA), University of Michigan (MA) and University of Amsterdam (Fulbright), and received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago. He spent three years in East Africa on education projects in the early 60s, and was active in the anti-Vietnam war and anti-nuclear movements. He taught Political Science at Bowdoin College until 1989 when he retired to work on building the Green Party. He is currently Professor Emeritus, Bowdoin College. Rensenbrink is married to Carla Washburne and they have three children.
