Health Care Is A Human Right Day Of Action

Health care is a human right not a pay or die commodity. The Green Party Of New York is a strong supporter of universal, single payer health care, and the New York Health Act. If you followed my campaign, you know that this is an issue that is very important to me personally and to voters across New York State. Health insurance is a scam, and the current Republican "plan" would make it even worse: the elderly would have to pay up to five times more than the young, and people with chronic illnesses could see a 30% surcharge on their premiums. Millions of Americans are just months away from being destitute. Our current system is unsustainable and it would be a very bold move for our state to pass the New York Health Act and show our fellow citizens what it looks like to provide access to health care for everyone, paid for fairly whenever it is needed. Rest in power, Lynne Stewart

The Green Party of New York mourns the loss of Lynne Stewart, the People's Lawyer and tireless warrior for justice, and expresses condolences to family and close friends. Stewart died at her home on Tuesday after suffering a stroke last week. Lynne Stewart spent most of her career defending the poor, the unwanted and sometimes controversial who were mistreated or ignored by the legal system. Lynne herself was targeted after she defended Egyptian cleric Omar Abdel Rahman, accused and found guilty of plotting to bomb New York City landmarks. Initially given a 10 month sentence for vigorously defending her client, Lynne fell victim to the "war on terror" and was re-sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2005. After losing her appeal, Lynne went to prison in 2009. After 5 years, she was finally granted a compassionate release due to her advanced cancer. Continue reading

Maryland Green Party Legislative Action Update

The Annapolis legislative session is about half over. There are a number of bills that we are supporting that will promote justice, democracy and the environment. Here is a summary of where they stand in the legislature. Please consider taking action to support these bills. The Maryland Pretrial Justice Reform Act of 2017 - HB1390/SB880 The cash bail system in Maryland is broken and unjust. It imposes jail time on those who have not yet been tried. Cash bail has a disproportionate impact on black communities and communities of people living in poverty. HB 1390 and SB 880 have the most potential to truly ameliorate the implications of Maryland’s unjust cash bail system, while creating community based alternatives and institutions which provide an alternative to incarceration.
