  The year 2023 didn't wait too long to make its remarkable presence known as January has brought unprecedented rains and storms roaring through California. The Atmospheric river and subsequent wind, storms, floods, and mud slides have killed at least 19 people and left tens of thousands under evacuation orders and storm watches. Heavy rainfall in downtown San Francisco flooded all of Highway 101's six lanes, and just last week in Sacramento, deluge of rains with 70-mile an hour winds knocked out power for over 345,000 people. Supporting multi-party democracy in California In a nation with a political climate centered around a two-party system since its inception, debate and discourse is consistently raised about effective ways to reform voting so that people of our country can vote according to their values rather than vote for one of the two evils. The dominant corporate parties suppress third parties like the Greens and silence voter’s voices disenfranchising more and more people from engaging in electoral politics because they are frustrated with the lack of choice and representation. The power to initiate a global apocalypse lies in the hands of the leaders of nine nations, yet their citizens and citizens across the world do have the mass power to create the political will to ban this possibility. As 122 nations of the world indicated when they adopted the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in July, 2017, it is unacceptable that these few leaders of Nuclear Weapon States should hold such destructive power.   A group of Green Party activists joined others in a powerful No Coal for Christmas demonstration in the industrial neighborhood of Curtis Bay in southwest Baltimore. The demonstration helped lead to a settlement, which was announced several weeks after the protest, between the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) and CSX. CSX will pay a $15,000 fine over an explosion in December 2021 and will pay a local nonprofit, the South Baltimore Community Land Trust, $100,000 for an environmental project. The fees are due to “the effect of the explosion on the neighborhood and the long-standing environmental injustices affecting Curtis Bay residents,” The Baltimore Sun reported. It's not clear if the residents of the area will be satisfied with this settlement because it leaves the coal yard unchanged. Continue reading
