(Ms. Rogers discusses the failed Medicare prescription drug bill and America's urgent need for single-payer National Health Insurance.)

I'm Marakay Rogers, Green Party candidate for Governor of Pennsylvania.

When the Republicans pushed their Medicare bill through Congress in 2003, they promised it would protect older Americans from being charged outrageous prices for their prescriptions.

The Medicare drug plan is a catastrophe. Many seniors' drug plans have been cancelled.

The same is true for Medicaid recipients caught in the current crisis. Medicaid drug costs are being cut at the expense of America's most vulnerable citizens, not at the expense of drug company profit.

Only one group benefits from the prescription fiasco -- drug companies. It's no surprise -- they helped write the legislation.

President Bush defends his Medicare bill, and the Administration accepts no responsibility for the current Medicaid prescription shambles.

Democrats' complaints have been ineffective, and no real solutions are being offered.

There's something neither party wants to talk about - a simple, cost-effective solution to our current health care crisis. National Health Insurance.

National Health Insurance, 'single-payer' health insurance, provides health coverage for every American. It guarantees health care and prescriptions regardless of age, income, or medical condition.

It costs working Americans less than they now pay, and also covers the 45 MILLION Americans who currently have no insurance.

HMOs, insurance firms, and drug companies contribute millions to Democrats and Republicans to make sure we don't get National Health Insurance. But we WILL get it when we stand up and demand that Congress and the President make health care a right for all Americans.

We'll get National Health Insurance when we elect people who don't take contributions from corporations. The Green Party takes no corporate money, and we're the only major party that supports National Health Insurance.

Rep. Conyers of Michigan has introduced a bill for National Health Insurance. Call your members of Congress, tell them to support it, and elect others who will.

Every other democratic country guarantees health care to its citizens.

America has promised its seniors, its veterans, the underprivileged, and most importantly, our children, the right to health care. We need to make good on that promise.

No American should lose their savings because of catastrophic illness or injury.

No American should choose between medicine and food.

And no American believes that any other American should have to do so.

Our government's job is to promote the general welfare of the people, NOT the welfare of drug companies.
