Houston, We Have a Solution - Vote Green 2016

Every four years, as part of its Annual National Meeting, the Green Party of the United States holds a Presidential Nominating Convention (PNC) to select a candidate for President of the United States. Delegates are chosen by each state party according to its own rules, either by a primary election, caucus, or state nominating convention.

This year's PNC will be held on campus of the University of Houston, in Houston, Texas. The University of Houston is adjacent to Texas Southern University in historic Third Ward, a central location in Houston's African American community.

Houston is a microcosm of the issues that face our society; a rich history paved over by gentrification, stark inequality on display next to environmentally ruined superfund sites evidencing our area's devotion to petrochemical and other polluting industry.

As a cultural crossroads, Houston has an incredibly vibrant arts scene. From our world famous art cars, Pacifica's KPFT, our local music scene, our museums, to the Space Center, Houston is filled with innumerable cultural attractions to satisfy any taste or curiosity.

Texas represents a unique opportunity for Green Party growth. In Laredo, at the heart of Texas' Rio Grande Valley, Greens had 6 candidates with results better than 10%, including one Webb County Commissioner candidate pulling 42%.

Harris County itself also presents an enormous opportunity for Green Party growth. Both the state and local party are eager to leverage this event as an opportunity to deliver the Green Party message.

The Annual National Meeting runs from Thursday, August 4 though Sunday, August 7, and includes the Presidential Nominating Convention which will occur on Saturday, August 6.

Location and Transportation

The University of Houston is located at:

4800 Calhoun Rd, Houston, TX 77004

Houston has two airports:

Hobby is located 8 miles southeast of the University of Houston, is a major hub for SouthWest, and is also served by JetBlue, Delta, and American Airlines.

Intercontinental is located 23 miles north of the University of Houston, is a major hub for United, and is also served by Alaska, American, Frontier, and Spirit Airlines.

Shuttles, bus service, and taxis are available from both airports.

Getting from the airport to UH campus via SuperShuttle:

You do not need a reservation upon arrival into the airport, but you will need a reservation for your departure from the University back to either airport. SuperShuttle is an on-demand, 24 hour, 7 day a week service.

When you arrive at either airport (George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby (HOU)), proceed to the ticket counter located in the baggage claim area of the terminal.

From IAH to the University of Houston the cost is $27 for the first passenger and $7 for each additional.
Alternatively, you can travel by taxi from the airport directly to the university from Intercontinental for about $51. Ask the driver about the fare before leaving the airport. Taxi fare is more expensive than the airport bus fare. There are three UH campuses in the greater Houston area, so be sure to tell the taxi driver that the address of the University of Houston is 4800 Calhoun Road.

Arriving at William P. Hobby Airport

From HOU to the University of Houston the cost is $23 for the first passenger and $7 for each additional.
If you arrive at Houston's Hobby Airport, you will be closer to the university. Taxi service is located in the airport's ground transportation area. The taxi fare from Hobby Airport is approximately $27. It is customary to tip the driver at least 15 percent of your fare.

Guests arriving in groups of 3 or more on the same flight are able to book an Exclusive van from either airport for $75 per van, per direction. Please note, prices may change at any time, so check with SuperShuttle before planning your trip.

Getting from the airport to UH campus via Public Transit:

Bush Intercontinental (IAH) airport: Take bus 102 from the airport to the Downtown Transit Center. From the transit center, take the METRO Light Rail Red Line to Central Station, then Purple Line to the UH South / University Oaks stop.

Hobby (HOU) airport: Take bus 40 from Hobby airport to the Eastwood Transit Center, then transfer to bus 25 to Wheeler St @ University Oaks Blvd. (roughly 1 hour).

Once you've arrived on campus, go to Registration at the Student Center South. If you are arriving via METRO and have a lot of baggage, you may wish to meet other Greens at Cougar Village before walking up to the Student Center. The METRO stop is much closer to Cougar Village than the Student Center. See the interactive Campus Map for further details.

UH has an excellent Campus Shuttle. The ANM committee has also arranged for a shuttle van for attendees who need assistance getting between the Student Center and Cougar Village / Moody Towers.

All meetings will occur at the Student Center. Additional small meeting spaces and lounges are available in Cougar Village on a first-come-first-served basis for impromptu meetings of committees, caucuses, delegations, etc.

The entire campus has wireless internet available at no cost to attendees.

Visitor parking is available at several lots around campus for $3/day.

Housing Options

Housing is available on campus and can be booked with registration online. All rooms are in Cougar Village, about 2 blocks from the Student Center. Linens are included, and single and double rooms are available. There are two kitchens on each floor with full-size appliances. You must bring your own utensils and cooking equipment, etc.

In addition to on-campus housing, there are a couple of hostels and a wide variety of hotel options available. UH boasts an on-site hotel (its Hilton school of Hotel & Restaurant Management w/ full conference capacity & 86 guest rooms - starting at $169/night) immediately across the street from the Student Center.

Meals

Meals are available on campus and can be booked with registration online. All meals are served buffet-style in Moody Towers, from Thursday breakfast through Sunday lunch. There are a variety of vegan, vegetarian, and other options available. Meals can be purchased a-la-carte.

There are a limited number of fast food restaurants in the Student Center, but their hours are very limited on Thursday and Friday, and they are closed Saturday and Sunday. Eric's Bistro and Lounge (menu) is open every day 6:30a-10pm and is located in the Hilton across the street from the Student Center. There are also a few restaurants within a couple blocks of the Student Center.

Meal prices are $7.50 breakfast, $8.25 lunch, and $9.75 dinner. Meals purchased on site will be charged an additional 8% sales tax.

Tourism and Entertainment

We should warn you that Houston is extremely hot and humid in the summer and is often subject to powerful thunderstorms. Houston is one of the largest and most diverse cities in the nation, with a metropolitan area population exceeding 6 million. The population breakdown (according to city-data.com) is 43.4% Hispanic, 23.2% Black, 6.5% Asian, and 25.3% White. Historically, Houston's Memorial Park was once a WWI era training camp for black soldiers, Camp Logan, and was central to the 1917 Houston riot.

Please register for the PNC online in advance by visiting our Registration Page.

You can use this form to register for the convention as well as book housing and purchase meals. The deadline to purchase rooms in the dorms is July 12, 2016. We cannot guarantee housing after that time.

Regular registration is $135. It will increase to $150 July 12 2016. For questions or concerns regarding registration, please contact Tamar Yager.

The Green Party has allocated at least 15 registration waivers for individuals who are traditionally disenfranchised. This includes women, people of color, youth, and LGBT persons. Waivers and subsidies will only be granted to people eligible to be a member of one of the GPUS caucuses. These are Women’s, Black, Latinx, Youth, or Lavender. There are also limited travel and lodging subsidies. The deadline for applications is May 20, 2016. You can find the application here.
