Lack of Climate Action by NY Lawmakers a Death Warrant for Humanity
Even as tens of millions of New Yorkers and other East Coast residents face a public health emergency from climate-driven wildfires in Canada, legislative leaders at the State Capitol are sending their members home for the rest of the year without taking action of many key climate issues.
The United Nations has repeatedly warned that governments are moving far too slowly to keep global warming below the safe target level of 1.5 degrees C. Scientists now expect that tipping point to be breached within the next five years (if not sooner), an existential threat to humanity, especially for the many developing countries located in the tropics where climate change is taking place fastest. This week the heat index in parts of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean soared to 125 degrees F, a situation that scientists called “astonishing.” A “once-in-200-years” heatwave has engulfed Southeast Asia and China.

The year 2023 didn't wait too long to make its remarkable presence known as January has brought unprecedented rains and storms roaring through California. The Atmospheric river and subsequent wind, storms, floods, and mud slides have killed at least 19 people and left tens of thousands under evacuation orders and storm watches. Heavy rainfall in downtown San Francisco flooded all of Highway 101's six lanes, and just last week in Sacramento, deluge of rains with 70-mile an hour winds knocked out power for over 345,000 people.

Joe Biden was sworn in as president two years ago on January 20, 2021. While he has taken some steps on climate, they have fallen far short of what is needed to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. He has continued to support the expansion of many fossil fuel sources.
People vs. Fossil Fuels is promoting a national day of action on Jan. 20 around the theme of climate emergency. Groups have organized dozens of rallies across the country.

“We’re out of time” say the Greens
The Green Party of New York today urged the NYS legislature to return to Albany in January ready to enact a far more ambitious climate plan than is being prepared by the Hochul-dominated Climate Action Council, staffed by many holdovers from the Cuomo administration.

The EcoAction Committee of the Green Party of the U.S. criticized the Biden administration as the United States once again impeded climate action at the recently concluded COP27 in Egypt.
“The head of the United Nations and leading scientists have repeatedly warned that the time to avoid climate collapse is running out and that the commitments made by governments worldwide are grossly inadequate. While the GOP have been climate deniers, the Democrats have long promoted climate delay, blocking critical action to halt fossil fuel burning as quickly as possible. The U.S. has been the biggest contributor to climate change and under Biden and Kerry it remains one of the biggest obstacles to saving life on the planet,” said Mark Dunlea, co-chair of EcoAction.

A Green Perspective by Mark Dunlea, Co-Chair of the EcoAction Committee of the Green Party of the United States
While the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 drafted by Senators Machin and Schumer may represent the largest U.S investment to date on climate, it falls far short of the Green New Deal (GND) first called for by the Green Party in the U.S. in 2010 and fails to cut emissions fast enough to keep global warming below the 1.5 degree Celsius target.
