We discuss the long history of US economic sanctions against Cuba, which started in 1960. The historical context, the precipitating events, annual condemnation of the sanctions by the UN, and current efforts to end them.

As Carlos Lazo and fellow Puentes Del Amor (Bridges of Love) walkers complete their march from Miami to Washington D.C., the Green Party of Florida (GPFL) hosted a solidarity virtual event as a prelude to the walkers' and caravaners' arrival at Lafayette Square, across from the White House, to demand that President Biden fulfill his campaign promise: to rescind the hundreds of sanctions imposed by his immediate predecessor, to return to the path toward normalization of relations with our neighbor 90 miles off our coast begun during Biden's tenure as Vice President, and for an end to the decades old embargo.

There has been much uproar to half a century old political dilemma with a country roughly 90 nautical miles from Miami. In a country with intermittent power outages, food shortages, lack of international trading partners, deteriorating infrastructure, limited access to much needed medical supplies. Yet despite these conditions, despite these deplorable conditions which none of us reading this statement, would endure, the People of Cuba have learned to improvise for the lack of bare human necessities caused by the U.S. embargo.

Here is information about happenings in Cuba and the streets of Miami that you may have seen in the news, which suggest that Miami's Cuban American caravan movement, and Carlos Lazo's Bridges of Love March to DC, which the Green Party of Florida (GPFL) participated in and helped publicize, may have triggered what has been an apparent orchestrated effort by the U.S. to instigate uprisings in Cuba and the U.S. against the Cuban government.
