News from Northwest Indiana
The Northwest Indiana Green Party has taken some hard knocks this spring as we push our grassroots environmental movement forward. We were not allowed to table at three local Earth Day events here in the region which means we have the establishment scared. In one email from an event organizer we were told that if we were allowed to table that we had to commit to not talk politics, not talk about Medicare For All and not talk about community health. As your NWI Greens we could not participate with our hands tied and voices muted.

Party Calls Upon State and Local Governments to Join the Trump Resistance
For Earth Day, the Green Party of the United States condemned the Trump administration’s ongoing assault on the environment, saying that it threatened humanity’s future on the planet. The Greens said it was critical that Governors, state and local legislators, Attorney Generals, law firms, and civil society commit to actively resist Trump’s denial of climate change and his efforts to enact authoritarian rule.

There are no longer questions or doubts that human-made climate change is already wreaking havoc on communities around our planet. It is a certainty that we have a very limited time left to reverse the damage our extractive, consumptive, capitalist systems have inflicted on the finely balanced ecosystems refined over millennia.
What remains a question is why do the governments of the richest, most resource- consumptive countries on our planet refuse to take action and divert humanity off this course of self-destruction?

Our country was shaken by the brutal murder of George Floyd in May of 2020. This week on April 19th the jury in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the police officer who knelt on the neck of George Floyd for 9 minutes and 29 seconds, found Chauvin guilty of all three charges of murder and manslaughter.

Beginning in 1970, the early years of Earth Day were political. Participants made spider webs from yarn to revere the world’s interconnectedness. After a few years, Earth Day became less about politics and more about activities such as cleaning up litter. We also stopped thinking like an ecosystem.
Not thinking like an ecosystem entails linear, reductionist, mechanistic thinking. Reductionist-style thinking can be applied to any domain, though is limited in providing thorough explanations. The Newtonian paradigm of science is reductionist. Newton’s first law of motion states a body’s motion will not change unless impinged upon by an outside force. In mainstream economics, similarly, economic crises are seen as anomalies.
Earth Day Every Day
Like many people around the world, I’ll be celebrating Earth Day today. And as a Green, I know that Earth Day is about much more than one time actions like recycling or picking up litter (as important as they are) but about ongoing sustainability.
Sustainability is one of the Green Party’s 10 Key Values. Sustainability is the idea that we as humans need to live in concert with the planet for the ongoing maintenance of that planet. We need to live in a manner that allows the Earth to sustain itself for generations to come.

- Celebrate Earth Day 2019 By Supporting the Green Party's Green New Deal
San Francisco, CA – The Green Party of California released the following statement today on Earth Day 2019.
In 1969, a three million gallon oil spill despoiled the coast of Santa Barbara and was the impetus for the creation of Earth Day. On April 22, 1970, twenty million people in the United States took part in Earth Day events and vowed to protect our only home. This year, it is expected that almost one billion people will recognize Earth Day, but it isn't enough. Only a few countries are to blame and ours is one of them.
