Why We March
On January 21, 2017, just one day after the polemic spewing Donald Trump was inaugurated President, millions of women across the globe came together to send a message. For the past year and a half, the world has watched horrified while he pushed the boundaries of what a person hoping to gain public trust can say aloud. As his racist, sexist, xenophobic, islamophobic hateful rhetoric stepped up, we were appalled. Worse yet was the fact that he seemed to be gaining support. It was this fact that scared us the most. His supporters, emboldened by their numbers, who felt it appropriate to brought us to doubt humanity.
The Women's March aims to send a message not only to Donald Trump, but to the members of his administration and especially to his supporters that we will fight against that rhetoric. stand up for women’s rights, with over 2000 people gathering in downtown Knoxville, to participate with sending a message to the newly appointed administration, and more importantly fight for the values of diversity, feminism, and equality. As Greens we can show up to support this message. Knoxville came together and our voice was heard. We have shown that we will fight for reproductive rights, we will fight for LGBTQIA+ rights, we will fight for the rights of immigrants, we will fight to end violence, we will fight for the environment. The march gives us hope going into the future with this new presidency. The Green Party will continue to follow our values right along side with this message, women’s rights are human rights.
Green Party marches in MLK parade
The MLK day parade is a wonderful event where so many from our community come out to show support in furthering Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream. The feeling during the event is so welcoming and uplifting. The participants carry that feeling back home and can share it with others. The Green Party of Knox County has been participating in the event for over a decade now. We are in solidarity with the spirit of the event because we know Martin's values are Green Values.
