Peace/Nonviolence: Middle East Weapons Embargo

Jill Stein says, “Our good allies are empowering enemies. Why don’t we start by ending the funding of terrorist groups?” Between Russia and the US, we could create a weapons embargo, ban weapon supplies to the Middle East and make Turkey close its borders with Syria and Iraq in a joint effort to defeat the Islamic State.

We need to dramatically reduce the amount of weapons we produce and sell worldwide and actively promote peaceful resolution of conflict—guided by justice.

Jill Stein is correct on this issue, just like she is on all of the others. This proposal would resonate with the broad American public. The U.S. should also stop arming Saudi Arabia, which is arming and funding terrorism and military violence. The Green Party can help reframe the foreign policy issues in ways that will attract broad public support for peace and nonviolent solutions.

This should be done, along with stopping the banking transactions associated with terrorism for weapons, ammo, fuel and vehicles, in order to defund wars. This will not be difficult once the monetary system is under public control. Currently it is under private control which enables them to pursue highly profitable but highly destructive investments with their government’s support. We need to make their government Our government.

Add to this that we need to put our foot down on Turkey and Saudi Arabia and tell them to stop funding terrorists.
We must also make clear that any support given to Anti-Daesh forces (FSA, YPG/YPJ, Peshmerga, Iraqi Military etc.) should be bare necessities like food, fuel, ammo and medical supplies. This is what they want and need, not M16s and Humvees.
