  The Green Party of the United States condemns President Trump's reckless withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Tuesday afternoon, May 8, 2018, and rejects the President's baseless statement that "this was a horrible, one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made." In spite of the saber-rattling rhetoric, Iran has remained compliant with the deal, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Green Party notes the one-sided nature of this deal, which punishes Iran while allowing Israel to proliferate nuclear weapons for "self-defense," a move that increases the possibility for escalated conflict in the Middle East. As stated by Michael J. Koplow of Haaretz Tuesday, "Netanyahu has convinced Trump that leaving the Iran deal protects Israel. PORTLAND, CT — The Green Party of Connecticut will hold its annual meeting, including a nominating convention to select candidates for statewide office, on Saturday, May 12. The meeting will take place at the Senior Center, 7 Waverly Ave., starting at 11 a.m. The Green Party plans to run a candidate for the US Senate seat currently occupied by Chris Murphy. (Flint, Mich) -- The Green Party of Michigan will hold its 2018 state nominating convention in Flint on Saturday, May 5. Registration begins at 9 am. The convention takes place from 10 am to 5 pm at the University of Michigan-Flint, Harding-Mott University Center, 400 Mill St, Flint MI 48503. Candidates seeking the Green Party nomination for federal, state, and local partisan elected offices (or endorsement for non-partisan offices) will be present, vying to represent the party in the November 2018 election. (HELENA, MT) – The Montana Green Party (MTGP) sought to have the ballot access case brought by the Montana Democratic Party (MTDP) moved to federal district court on Monday. This action was taken on the basis of the belief that the case “...is an action involving issues of law arising under the U.S. Constitution.” The motion claims that statute (MCA 13-10-601), regarding ballot access in primary and general election, is unconstitutionally burdensome to third parties. The MTGP Coordinator Danielle Breck stated that “The Montana Green Party has repeatedly shown, through our various petitioning efforts, that we do, in fact, have the “modicum of voter support” the law requires and that our candidates are not “frivolous,” but rather provide an important alternative to pre-selected, unresponsive, corporate controlled candidates offered by the two-party oligarchy. The state statute on which the plaintiff’s case is based is itself unconstitutional, and it is for this reason we believe this matter should be heard in federal court.” Continue reading

April 13, 2018 – Last week public school teachers throughout Oklahoma and Kentucky courageously followed the example of West Virginia’s educators, by committing to statewide wildcat* strikes. Between 2008 and 2015, per-student education spending in Kentucky fell by 11.4 percent; in Oklahoma, by 15.6. In both states, as in West Virginia, lawmakers paired disinvestment from education with tax cuts for high-earners and business interests. WV Governor Justice (R-CoalBaron) came up with what turned out to be a low-ball offer, which teachers flatly rejected. It was probably because earlier in the year Justice had been pushing for tax cuts on the inventories of his many extraction industries. Continue reading

(MONTANA) The Montana Green Party (MTGP) and their legal counsel Quentin Rhoades joined with the Secretary of State's office Tuesday to defend the legitimacy of their ballot access petition. The lawsuit, which was filed by the Montana Democratic Party on April 2nd, calls into question the validity of a handful of the 7386 validated signatures turned in by MTGP supporters. Although Montana state law only requires minor parties to collect 5000 signatures from 34 of its 100 house districts, it also requires a certain number from each district. The 180 validated signature that the Democrats are contesting come out of 9 strategic districts that, if rejected in, would disqualify them from the general election ballot in the fall. “We are facing a precarious historic moment. Democracy is threatened by interference in our elections, and by interference in our civil liberties. Likewise we are endangered by warmongering, rampant militarism, nuclear confrontation and accelerating climate change. To solve any of these interlinked problems, we need a functioning democracy and a voting system we can have confidence in. As first steps to restore trust in that system, we are calling for a nonpartisan Emergency Commission for Election Protection & Voting Justice, as well as international negotiations for an election non-interference treaty. These should be stepping stones toward broader international dialogue to address other urgent looming threats that endanger not only our democracy, but our very survival. Continue reading

The Green Party joins advocacy groups in urging U.S. Education Secretary Betsy Devos to retain essential guidance on school discipline in regard to race. Devos is considering whether to rescind a 2014 letter — jointly issued by the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice – that offers guidance to public elementary and secondary schools on administering student discipline in a manner that does not discriminate on the basis of race. This follows her rescission of guidance on the protection of transgender students and on campus sexual assault. Continue reading
