“As a result of the contamination of our water sources, the harmful pollution from manufacturing waste, and the impending climate catastrophe that is causing mass weather and ecological devastation, Americans face major health and environmental impacts that ruin quality of life,” Khalil stated.
Who would have thought making a comment about an earthquake could start a political earthquake among those who don’t think climate change exists at all?
According to many experts, changes in sea levels from global warming can vastly increase the risk of earthquakes. According to Bird: “…this may result from stress release due to glacial unloading, as the weight of ice over the landmass reduces with melting. Previous studies have shown that unloading can impact the seismic stress field several hundred kilometers from the ice sheet margin, thus expanding the possibility of intraplate earthquake activity.”
Many people concerned about the environment and climate change have long argued that the “precautionary principle” should be incorporated into every policy passed to protect the U.S. and the rest of the world from environmental damage. Given the above article’s conclusions and these words from a prominent climate scientist at a university leading the way in climate research in New Jersey who wishes to remain anonymous, we had better start paying attention to what the planet is telling us:
As the Polar Ice Caps melt...all that water weight (North Pole ice cap alone weighs 27 million billion tons, per google) trapped on the poles of the Earth...gets redistributed globally. This redistribution will cause new stresses on the Tectonic plates which inevitably results in ...earthquakes (and volcanoes)...we can say...there will most definitely be many more earthquakes as the water weight is redistributed.
The Khalil campaign will prioritize investing in clean and reusable energy and resources immediately. It will utilize initiatives in the Green Party’s Green New Deal, and introduce legislation to clean our water supplies of dangerous pollutants immediately. We will also hold corporations accountable by combating destructive projects like the Willow Project and Mountain Valley Pipelines.
