The high cost of electricity
Why is electricity so expensive on Long Island -- and NY in general? At a recent meeting of the Green Party of Nassau County, activist Fred Harrison took a deep dive into the many contributing factors, and suggested some ways of fighting back. Some of this information will apply to other areas of the state as well.
Fred Harrison came to discuss reducing electric rates on Long Island by making LIPA a fully nonprofit utility. He also discussed why a class action, climate change alwsuit against the fossilf uel industry makes good sense for LIPA ratepayers.
Fred Harrison is a retired teachers union activist and leader who has been involved in politics since the 1960s. He is currently volunteering with Food and Water Watch as a utility ratepayer advocate, and is an expert on all aspects of the problem. Fred speaks often at LIPA Board meetings in favor of nonprofit public power, and has submitted testimony to the Commission on the Future of LIPA about dramatically reducing electric rates and democratizing governnance.
