Julia Willebrand 1933 – 2023
It is with profound sadness and grief that we share the news that our beloved mother Julia died on December 31st. She was a proud mother and diehard New Yorker who lived on the upper west side since 1967. She had a deep and meaningful relationship with her husband Jan who preceded her in death in 1988. Julia was born in Brooklyn May 29, 1933 eldest daughter in a family of ten siblings. She was a fierce woman, a committed environmentalist, a deeply political social justice warrior, an early feminist, and a dedicated Green Party activist. She was also a long time friend of Bill’s, a voracious reader and theater lover. Her life intersected with many many circles. Over the years she hosted many political and family events, generously sharing her wonderful cooking and home with others.
Julia loved the Michigan Women’s Music Festival and attended until the final Festival in 2015 when she was 82 years old. She presented workshops there on the Green Party and ageism where she made it crystal clear that feminism and environmentalism are entwined, well before there was the word intersectionality.
She was cared for at home by her son Dirk and his partner Raisa and her caregivers Audrey and Shanta. Julia died in Berkeley California at the home of her daughter Lia and her partner Lisa. Her passing New Years Eve morning was gentle and peaceful, following a stroke on Christmas Day. Lia and Lisa gathered friends in vigil that afternoon in prayer, song and food to send Julia off, social being that she was - surrounded by community and love. Thank you for keeping her, her siblings, Dirk, Lia, Lisa and Raisa in your loving thoughts. There will be a memorial for her in New York at a future time.
