Black History Month

  • Honoring Legacy, Confronting Systemic Violence, Building Collective Power, Shaping Our Future

This Black History Month, we celebrate the foundational and transformative genius of Black America. We honor the legacy of our members who carry this work into the political arena, such as Chester Todd, Jr., a dedicated Green Party & National Black Caucus member who brought our values to the forefront in his 2024 run for U.S. House in Wisconsin's 1st Congressional District. We are the inventors, the artists, the organizers, and the political visionaries. Our history is a testament to resilience in the face of a system that has too often met our presence with control and violence. It is not a sidebar to the American story—it is the bedrock of its innovation, culture, and relentless pursuit of justice.

To be Black in America is to live under the constant threat of state violence, a system designed to endanger and control our bodies throughout our entire lives. This oppression manifests in myriad forms, tracking us from a mother’s womb to our final breath.

We witness it in the denial of essential healthcare, as with Adriana Smith, a Black woman in Georgia who was forced to remain on life support for months due to state abortion bans—a chilling example of how legislation can weaponize the state to override bodily autonomy and inflict trauma.

We see it in the deadly presumption of guilt imposed on our children, as with 12-year-old Tamir Rice, shot and killed by police in 2014 while playing in a park. The officer fired his weapon within seconds of arriving at the scene, after a 911 call reported a "guy with a pistol". Although the nation mourned, there were no federal charges filed and the officer was fired for unrelated reasons.

And we see it in the armed overreach of federal agencies, as with Keith Porter, Jr., a 29-year-old Black man fatally shot by ICE agents in Los Angeles on December 31, 2025. ICE is not merely an immigration agency; it is a law enforcement body with the power to kill, without impunity, extending the reach of the same carceral state that has historically targeted Black communities.

The immigrant community is vast, and we affirm: no one is illegal on stolen land. While ICE's brutality disproportionately targets many communities, its actions represent a broader machinery of state control and dehumanization. The fear and violence it instills mirror the policing reality Black Americans have endured for generations. It is the same system, wearing a different badge.

Our community knows the cost of this erosion deeply. And we also know our power to create sanctuary. Black Americans have always been the architects of our own destiny, building networks of safety, education, and care when none were provided. This same spirit compels us to act now.

As the National Black Caucus of the Green Party US, our fight is against this interconnected system. We stand in solidarity with all communities facing state violence, while focusing our specific resolve on ending the perpetual crisis facing Black lives—from medical apartheid to police terror to the carceral systems that criminalize our existence. We believe in abolishing ICE, ending mass incarceration, investing in community-led safety initiatives, and fighting for reparations and restorative justice.
