Call for proposals for 2018 GPUS Annual National Meeting
We are requesting that any local or state party interested in hosting the 2018 Annual Meeting send a letter of intent before September 6, 2017. There will be an informational call in mid-September with all proposals due in mid-to-late October so voting can be done in November.
We will have some time for locations to talk for a few minutes about their city at the Saturday plenary in Newark. After we have all those interested we can meet in Newark to discuss basic requirements. Or, if that is not possible, we will have a conference call.
Keep the following in mind as you think about your location:
Geographical location – have we been to area of the country recently? We definitely try to be in a different region for the PNC every 4 years and for the ANM when possible. (PNCs have been held in 2008 Chicago, 2012 Baltimore and 2016 Houston). ANMs were held in 2009 Durham, 2010 Detroit (in collaboration with the US Social Forum), 2011 Alfred, NY, 2013, Iowa City, 2014 Minneapolis and 2015 St. Louis and 2017 Newark, NJ.
Demographics/Diversity – Are there opportunities for outreach to under-represented groups including young people, working class, people of color, and other marginalized populations?
Activities – are there opportunities to petition, protest or march, participate in registration drives, living wage campaigns, etc.
Accessibility – are the venue and lodging fully accessible. Is there good public transportation between the transportation centers and the venue.
Local/state activity – Are there active locals, candidate campaigns, groups of volunteers
Speakers – Are there a variety of speakers we might get for low/no cost to the party.
Venues – Ideal venues would have all meeting facilities, dining and lodging in the same general area. University settings are usually the most cost-efficient. However, other facilities are possible. We usually plan for 125-150 people although we are growing. Lodging and meals would be available for about 75% of the attendees. Others may stay off-site or are commuters.
Dates for the 2018 meeting would be: July 19-22, July 26-29 or August 2-5.
