May Day 2024: Workers' Rights are Human Rights
Chicago's Haymarket Riot in 1886 may have triggered the historic labor movement leading to May 1, being recognized as the International Workers Day, but workers' struggle against capitalist exploitation has existed long before then. Throughout history the labor movement has closely intersected with many other critical social justice movements such as the suffrage movement and the civil rights movement.
In more recent times, major strikes and unionization campaigns have included the Amazon warehouse workers campaign to unionize, the railroad workers success to secure sick leave despite the Biden administration's attempt to stop their strike, the health-care workers strikes, the largest recorded strike in the U.S. medical sector, and Hollywood's high-profile 5-month walk out actors and screenwriters strikes.
As Greens, we recognize the explicit role of capitalism in the exploitation of people and planet. We acknowledge that the same forces that exploit and oppress workers, are also waging global wars, destabilizing the climate, and installing undemocratic governments, all as means to a profitable end for the billionaire class.
Our EcoSocialist Platform aims to build a socially and racially just, ecologically sustainable, democratic and peaceful society that exists in harmony with nature. On this May Day, we honor workers' struggle and commit to a society that addresses human need over capitalists' greed.
