10th Annual Degrowth Summer School, Barcelona, June 3, 2024
The EcoAction Committee of the Green Party of the U.S. will hold a webinar on Monday, June 10 th about the issue of degrowth. The event, which begins at 8:00 PM ET, requires registration. The workshop will explore various issues within the degrowth movement, including how to deal with the present level of development in the Global South.
At the first international conference on degrowth in Paris in 2008, degrowth was defined as a “voluntary transition towards a just, participatory, and ecologically sustainable society.” The degrowth movement prioritizes social and ecological well-being instead of corporate profits, over-production, and excess consumption. This requires radical redistribution, a reduction in the material size of the global economy, and a shift in common values towards care, solidarity, and autonomy. Degrowth means transforming societies to ensure environmental justice and a good life for all within planetary boundaries.
Anitra Nelson supports social and environmental justice movements, such as degrowth and ecosocialism; caring and sharing local-to-global communities; living the good life and low impact living. Anita is an Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne and author of Beyond Money: A Postcapitalist Strategy; Exploring Degrowth: A Critical Guide; and, Small is Necessary: Shared Living on a Shared Planet.
Brian Czech is the Executive Director and founding president of CASSE (Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy). Czech is the author of several books including Supply Shock, Shoveling Fuel for a Runaway Train, and The Endangered Species Act. His primary contributions to ecological economics pertain to the trophic theory of money, the process of technological progress, and the political “steady state revolution.”
Don Fitz has taught Environmental Psychology at Washington University and Fontbonne University in St. Louis. He is on the Editorial Board of Green Social Thought, and a former Green Party candidate in Missouri for Governor. His articles on Degrowth include “Is degrowth against workers’ interests?”
David Schwartzman is a professor emeritus of biology at Howard University and author of A critique of Degrowth: An ecosocialist perspective in the context of a global Green New Deal. He runs www.solarUtopia.org. He is a member of the EcoAction committee from DC.
