Gil Obler's 2022 candidacy for the GPUS Steering Committee has centered around:
- a commitment to "get the work done"
- a commitment to listen to all sides, seek common ground, and "reach across the aisle" to move the GPUS forward
He has been a multi-decade white ally of GPUS' National Black Caucus and a strong advocate for diversity and "big-tent" inclusion in the Green Party. He believes in working to build consensus and that our party's shared values demand always striving for equity, inclusion, and diversity.
Some past accomplishments that demonstrate this approach and its value:
- (2000) - Treasurer for the Boston Nader SuperRally (coordinated over 9000 tickets sold in six weeks)
- (2001-2003) - A principal negotiator and advocate of the merger process between the Massachusetts Green Party and the Rainbow Coalition Party
- (2001-2004) - The Green-Rainbow merger process helped build the Massachusetts party from ~3000 party members to over 12,000 party members
- (2001-2003) - Office Manager of the Green Party community organizing space in Somerville, MA; Jill Stein ran for Governor in 2002 from this office
- (2004) - Led the process that modified 2004 Convention rules to provide stage time to the "minor GPUS candidates" for the Presidential nomination
- (2004) - Leadership as a co-chair of the GPUS Accreditation Committee during a previous period when polarization threatened to destroy the party
- (2008) - Liaison between the GPUS and the Reconstruction Party during Cynthia McKinney's presidential run
- (2008-2022) - Active leader and organizer in the Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Coalition NYC
- (2016-2022) - Delegate and alternate to the GPUS National Committee representing New York State
- (2018-2019) - Chair of the Uhuru Solidarity Movement NYC
- (2021-2021) - One of the co-chairs of the GPUS Diversity Committee
