Global Warming Accelerating - Green Party Calls Out Trump’s Climate Inaction
With a new report by Dr. James Hansen showing that global warming is accelerating faster than scientists had predicted, the Green Party condemned Donald Trump’s efforts to kill any action to slow climate change and calls on Congress and states to do that same.
In his first two weeks back in the White House, Trump repudiated the Paris Climate accords, appointed climate deniers and fossil fuel interests to run the nation’s environmental and energy programs, gave a green light to expand greenhouse gas emissions, and blocked funding for renewable energy.

“Climate change is an existential threat to the future of human civilization, as extreme weather is already devastating communities across the globe. We need elected officials at all levels – Congress, state, cities – to put the interests of the 99% ahead of the greed and profits of the fossil fuel industry and the 1% and take rapid action to move to zero greenhouse gas emissions and transition to 100% clean, renewable energy,” stated Rachel Braaten, member of the Green Party of Minnesota and co-chair of the Green Party EcoAction Committee.
The Greens acknowledged that while Trump and the GOP are climate deniers, the Democrats are climate delayers.
The Green Party has called for elected representatives on the national and state levels to take bold action on climate. Green officials in New York are dismayed by the retreat of Democratic Governor Hochul on climate issues. Hochul recently approved a major expansion of the Iroquois gas pipeline; delayed and weakened congestion pricing in New York City; is promoting false climate solutions such as nuclear and carbon capture. Tom DiNapoli, the state comptroller, reversed his commitment to divest the state’s massive public pension funds from large gas and oil companies.
“Our ecosocialist Green New Deal is not only a major step towards ending unemployment for good, but also a tool to fight the corporate takeover of our democracy and exploitation of the poor and people of color. Our transition to 100% clean energy will be based on community, worker and public ownership as well as democratic control of our energy system, rather than maximizing profits for energy corporations, banks and hedge funds. We need to treat clean energy as a human right and a common good. We also need a just transition to provide resources to the low-income communities and communities of color most impacted by climate change,” said Joey Naham, national co-chair from New York.
The Green Party said it would pay for the transition to a clean energy future through a 50 to 75% cut in the military budget; a robust carbon tax (fee and dividend); requiring polluters to pay for the damage their emissions have caused; and, raising taxes on the wealthy.
