Green candidates in county, municipal, school, and special district elections in 2024
updated on November 3, 2024 by Mike Feinstein, Elections Database Manager.
Highlights
• The total number of Green candidates on the ballot on Nov. 5 will be at least 129. The total number of Green candidates for all of 2024, including those who ran earlier or are running in November, is projected to be at least 174, with news of additional Greens running in local government races still coming in.
Local races
• In November 5 elections, at least 39 Greens are running in nonpartisan municipal, county and special district races, and nine more in partisan such races, for a total of at least 48 running for local office, with uncontested victories projected in at least 14.
• Earlier in 2024, at least 35 Greens ran for nonpartisan county, municipal, school, special district and tribal council office. At least 23 were elected, for a winning percentage of 65.7% (23/35).
• For all of 2024, the total number of Greens running in municipal, county, school, special district and tribal races is at least 81, with at least 37 projected to be elected — pre-counting the 14 uncontested races, but pending the results of contested races in November.
• As of July 1, 2024, at least 157 Greens were holding elected office across the U.S. . Historically, at least 1529 U.S. Greens have been elected all time.
State and Federal races
• In November, 45 Greens will be running for Federal office — eight for the U.S. Senate and 37 for the U.S. House Of Representatives. On the state level, 15 Greens are running for various statewide offices and 21 more for state legislature. Depending upon the state, state Green Parties can gain, retain, or extend ballot status, depending upon the Greens' results in their statewide races and/or the presidential race.
• Earlier in 2024 ten Greens ran in state and federal races and did not advance to the November general election. Six Greens ran in "top two" primary elections in California (3) and Washington (3), did not finish first or second, and therefore did not advance to the general election. Greens oppose top two/top four/top five elections as anti-democratic and limiting voter choice and call for elections by proportional representation instead.
• In Arizona, two candidates whom Arizona Greens suspected were plants from the Democrats and Republicans were defeated in a three-way U.S. Senate primary by the candidate endorsed by the Green Party. Montana saw a two-way contested Green primary, where the winning candidate dropped out before the general election, and the loser successfully filed to replace him on the general election ballot. In Maine, a Green write-in candidate for the U.S. House failed to receive enough write-in votes to advance to the general election.
