The Greens said the nomination of Vought most exemplifies the effort by Donald Trump to install himself as an imperial President, with dictatorial powers unrestrained by Congress. Vought, who previously served as head of OMB during part of Trump’s first term, is the architect of Trump’s effort to freeze federal funding despite the constitutional requirement that Congress determine federal spending. During his nomination hearings, Vought stated his belief that the Impoundment Control Act, which sets limits on the president’s powers to restrict funding approved by Congress, is unconstitutional.
“It is time for Congress to make clear that they will not allow Trump to ignore the Constitution. Vought is at the center of Trump’s effort to act as a King, surrounded by oligarchs, unfettered by the Constitution, Congress, or the rule of law,” stated Cassandra Lems, a member of the national Green Party steering committee.
The Green Party acknowledged that Congress should have rejected virtually all of Trump’s nominees, as he has installed the most unqualified presidential Cabinet in American history, full of billionaires, Fox News media personalities, and writers of Project 2025.
The Greens criticized the Democrats for “failing to aggressively oppose Trump’s efforts to promote fascism and to protect average Americans, starting with immigrants and the LGBTQIA+ communities,” states Darryl! Moch, GP cochair. The Democrats’ tepid response to the January 6, 2021, coup attempt enabled Trump to escape criminal accountability for his treason and opened the door for him to return to the White House.
The Green Party noted that a majority of Americans cast their votes for a candidate other than Trump (and none voted for Musk). The Party called upon the Democrats to join with the voices of most Americans - and the Green Party - and act like a true opposition party and use all their powers (e.g., quorum calls, blocking unanimous consent) to fight back against Trump.
