Recent news from the Green Party of New Mexico
Legislation we have supported in the past and expect to be introduced this session.
Office of Peacebuilding – Please contact Representative Andrea Romero and ask her to reintroduce the bill to create an Office of Peacebuilding.
HB 130, Public Banking Act
This bill would create the Public Bank of New Mexico and provide initial funding. It is scheduled to be heard in HCEDC on Feb 5
SJR 4, Environmental Rights
This bill would ask the voters of New Mexico to decide the question of granting a constitutional right to clean air, water, soil, etc. It would direct the state, counties, and municipalities to serve as trustees of natural resource for the benefit of all the people. It is currently in the Senate Rules Committee.
SB 216, Rent Control and Certain Entities
The bill would repeal the prohibition on municipalities, counties, and home-rule jurisdictions to enact rent control on privately owned properties. Should this bill pass, it would be up to localities to decide whether or not to legislate caps on rent for housing.
Please be aware that several bills have been introduced regarding water quality and supply that could produce very different outcomes.
Finally, a note on our ballot status. The Office of the Secretary of State had published unofficial election results that indicated the Green Party ticket achieved enough votes to maintain our ballot line. The number of votes received changed on the update prior to certification and reduced the number of votes for Stein/Ware by eight votes. This change took us below the threshold to keep our ballot line without having to collect signatures again. We attempted to work with the Elections Bureau to clarify what happened but were ultimately met with their final position that published results prior to certification were unofficial.
