The Green Party of the United States is seeking an Independent Consultant with a demonstrated capacity to lead our organization as we begin a cultural transformation process with a goal of equity and inclusion. The Independent Consultant will work as a team with designated Green Party Trainer(s) to plan and lead an anti-racism and anti-oppression training to support the transformation and design a plan for the party to facilitate and maintain the change going forward.

The Green Party of the United States is a federation of state green parties that received formal recognition as a National Committee (NC) from the Federal Election Commission in 2001. Each affiliated state party has elected representatives on the NC, which is the governing body of the party. The party has five identity caucuses  that also have elected representatives on the NC. The nine-member Steering Committee elected by the NC helps execute the day-to-day administration and operations of the party such as the submission of proposals and the supervision of staff, and the members also serve as spokespeople for the party. In addition, there are 25 standing committees with various tasks that members of state parties and caucuses can join. There are two staff members: a website manager and a communications manager.

The four pillars of our party are Peace and Non-Violence, Ecological Wisdom, Grassroots Democracy, and Social Justice. However, in practice our party does not always support these ideals in the area of social justice. Our goal is to provide an alternative political option for all people in the United States, yet many of our internal and external communications and practices have made historically marginalized people, particularly people of color, feel that their participation is not valued or even wanted. Some have dropped out of our party entirely after negative experiences. We recognize there are ongoing challenges with accountability and racial/gender power dynamics that are preventing us from achieving our goal of a political party that values all people and provides a safe space for those who choose us for their political home.

We have had previous anti-oppression trainings in some of our state parties and for a self-selected group at a previous national meeting, but this year we will be offering this training to all our members, including NC members, at our virtual national meeting on July 15-18, 2021, so that we can advance equity through all aspects of our work. We expect 150 members to attend. Our meeting will be the first step in a process toward becoming a more diverse and inclusive organization that is representative of the diversity of our nation. Long-term, we hope to achieve equity within our party, especially racial equity, and transform our organization into one that has inclusiveness, anti-racism and anti-oppression as its foundation. While race and racism will be our primary focus at this meeting, we hope our process can be broadened to consider other forms of oppression and how to combat them in our own organization and through our work. Our training will include an overview on colonialism, imperialism, and capitalism and how these historical practices inform our interactions today.

Some of the issues we hope to address are:

  • White privilege
  • Entitlement
  • Micro and macro-aggressions
  • Bias
  • Intersectionality
  • Valuing and not tokenizing diversity
  • Maintaining a respectful work environment
  • Improving members’ relationships and interactions across race, gender and sexual orientation

We are seeking the services of an Independent Consultant with the demonstrated expertise and ability to guide our party as we engage in this cultural realignment.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have experience leading anti-racist and anti-oppression trainings
  • Be able to lead large political organizations through cultural change
  • Be skilled in viewer engagement on video conferencing platforms such as Zoom
  • Be enthusiastic about working as a team with designated Green Party Trainer(s) in advance of the meeting to develop a plan for the training that adequately addresses our party’s particular issues
  • Have experience in creating plans for future action to facilitate and maintain change

  • Preparation in advance of the meeting with designated Green Party Trainer(s) to create a plan for the training
  • Delivery of a comprehensive anti-racism and anti-oppression online training for approximately 150 party members to occur between Friday evening, July 16, 2021, and Sunday noon, July 18, 2021
  • Post training follow-up with designated Green Party Trainer(s) to create a plan to facilitate and maintain change, to be delivered by August 31, 2021

At minimum each proposal will include the following:
