David Rolde advances proposal for Green Party to call for the total elimination of the U.S. military
As a candidate for the 2020 Green Party U.S. Presidential nomination, one of the main issues that I have been focusing on is calling for the U.S. military to be totally eliminated. The GPUS and the Green Party Presidential nominee should be calling for the U.S. military budget to be reduced to zero, not just cut by 50% or some other arbitrary amount. I have been an anti-imperialist anti-war activist for at least 18 years. Elimination of the U.S. military has been my political position (and the position of many other anti-imperialist anti-war activists who I work with) for a long time since before I ever thought of running for the GPUS Presidential nomination.
In 2018 I submitted a proposal to the State Committee of my state Green Party, the Green-Rainbow Party of Massachusetts (GRP), for the GRP to take a position in favor of totally eliminating the U.S. military and for GRP to propose amending the GPUS Platform to make this change. I couldn’t get the proposal on the GRP State Committee meeting agenda in 2018. But I resubmitted the proposal this year for the Summer 2019 State Committee meeting. Danny Factor co-sponsored the proposal with me.
For months the Green-Rainbow Party State Committee, and other GRP members, discussed the proposal. I am proud to say that the proposal was approved at the October 5, 2019 State Committee meeting. This is now the official position of the Green-Rainbow Party of Massachusetts. Please read the approved proposal below. I submitted the GPUS Platform amendment proposals to the GPUS Platform Committee on September 29, 2019, and told them that the proposal is from GRP pending final approval expected on October 5. The GRP has now informed GPUS Platform Committee that the proposal is from GRP. . I hope discussion will move forward in the GPUS and that we will be able to amend the GPUS Platform so that we will no longer call for the continued existence of the U.S. military.
