Jill's Press Conference and Federal Update
Jill Stein was in Pennsylvania to meet the media and to show her support for the incredible effort of the Pennsylvania recount volunteers. Dr. Stein continues to express the need for voting results that can be verified, and for election audits to prove that ALL votes are counted. Her visit was timed to coincide with the Federal Hearing in Philadelphia, in which we are asking for a recount of the entire state as a matter of constitutional guarantees of free and fair elections. Jill also explained the blatant continuation of "electoral Jim Crow" through the Michigan recount.
It turns out that in Detroit and Flint there are over 75,000 ballots where voters appeared, but cast NO vote for ANY presidential candidate. This is glaring on its face, and surely demonstrates why a recount is needed there, yet those very ballots have been declared ineligible for recounting. Dr. Stein called this outrageous and vowed to fight as long as needed to see these issues addressed and resolved. Despite the cold and raw weather in Philadelphia, Jill was surrounded by the warmth and support of about 50 supporters.
In a three hours-long hearing on Friday, the Jill Stein Recount legal team presented our case for forensic examination of voting machines in Pennsylvania. Our attorneys were supported by a packed courtroom of observers. There were so many there that about 2 dozen waited in the hallway outside for seat to become available inside the courtroom. Cyber expert, Professor J. Alexander Halderman testified on the issues of vulnerability and unreliability of electronic voting equipment. Considering the late stage of the process, we are most hopeful for a decision which will allow a sample of the various machines to be properly tested. Our lawyers were wonderful in court despite being opposed by lawyers for the Commonwealth and for the Republican Party. We are asking all volunteers to be prepared in the event of a favorable decision. Should that happen, we will need to deploy observers to any areas being counted.
Meanwhile, the final county-level recount has been in full swing since Thursday afternoon in Chester County. Volunteers in Chester worked until 8 pm on Friday, and there is a full day of counting scheduled for today. Chester may wrap up today, but, if not, then we would expect it to finish by Monday. If you are interested in helping in Chester County, please email Jenyne Carter at [email protected].
Naturally, donations are still welcome. The bully teams of GOP lawyers are causing our costs to rise at every front. We have stood up at every encounter thanks to the tremendous grassroots effort of our volunteers and donors, so on behalf of the entire Recount Team: THANK YOU!
