How We'll Win Ranked Choice Voting in New York

  • The Green Party of New York (GPNY) Presents: How We'll Win Ranked Choice Voting in New York. With Julia Muench, Howie Hawkins and Dave Heller of Ranked Choice NY

Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) is a voting system that allows voters to rank candidates on a ballot in order of preference rather than choosing one candidate.

With RCV, you can rank your favorite candidate first, and even if your first choice does not win, you can still help choose the winner by ranking other candidates your second, third, fourth (and so on) choices.

Sounds great, right? So how do we win it, especially when giving voters MORE choice is the LAST thing the elected power structure wants to do?

By building an irresistible movement, that's how! And we're thrilled to have three speakers from Ranked Choice NY  discuss how Greens can help make that happen.

Julia Muench: As part of her environmental advocacy, Julia has been an active volunteer for election and voter reform to root out corruption in politics. She first knocked on doors for RCV in 2010, and has been active in multiple organizations and political campaigns supporting such reforms ever since. Julia grew up in Nassau County and earned her B.S. in Natural Resources Management at SUNY ESF in Onondaga County.

Howie Hawkins has been an organizer in movements for peace, justice, labor, the environment, and independent working-class politics since 1967. Howie is a socialist who believes self-organization, independent political action, and international solidarity by the working class and oppressed people for full political and economic democracy is the way to build a society. He has represented the Green Party as a nominee for Governor and President.

Dave Heller has been a Ranked Choice Voting advocate since 2000. He worked on the 2002 RCV campaign in San Francisco and was the campaign coordinator for the 2004 campaign in Berkeley, California, which won with more than 72% of the vote. He was elected as a Board Member of Californians for Electoral Reform.

He recently moved back to his home in Dutchess County and is ready to bring election reform to New York State.
