Climate Strikes & other news from NOLA
New Orleans – At September meeting of the Green Party of New Orleans we learned there's a lot going on in the Crescent City, across the state, and around the world, that will be of interest to all Greens.
Even as I type, people are converging on the Public Service Commission meeting in Baton Rouge. If you care about solar energy, contact your commissioner immediately and demand the preservation of net metering.
Tonight, there will be a New Orleans organizing call for the the upcoming global climate strikes. Join Zoom Meeting at 6:00 p.m. via zoom.us/j/137829216 or call (929) 205-6099 and enter Meeting ID: 137 829 216.
For more on the climate strikes, see strikewithus.org. Short of the long, the global youth-led strike is happening on the 20th of September. The rest of us are striking in solidarity on the 27th. There are actions being planned for the entire week between.
Extinction Rebellion is organizing in New Orleans! There will be a meet'n'greet this Saturday. Go to extinctionrebellion.us and look for the map to sign up for New Orleans updates. XR will also make a presentation at First Unitarian Universalist Church (2903 Jefferson) around 6:00 p.m. on the evening of September 22nd, followed by nonviolence training which will be important for the strike-related actions.
Looking ahead to October, we have elections coming up. We have done some preliminary research on candidates but we need your help to complete the task of developing voter advice. If interested, please let us know by return email.
Also in October, the legendary Howie Hawkins will be coming to New Orleans. Catch him at the Hi-Ho on the 27th of October. Stay tuned for details.
Finally, back to the subject of elections, we had a visit from our friends at Democratic Socialists of America, who shared the following:
Marguerite Green, a DSA member, is running on a platform of
- locally grown food,
- supporting small farms,
- fighting climate change, and
- legalizing recreational cannabis and auto-expungement of cannabis related convictions.
More info about her platform can be found here: www.greenforagriculture.com
DSA New Orleans has organized a TON of canvasses for her campaign over the next month. Anyone interested in joining these canvasses, or if you just want to hear more about the campaign, please use this volunteer form. Pass it along!
The next meeting of the Green Party of New Orleans will be in late October before Howie's visit. We'll let you know as soon as we secure the venue.
