The Imperative of Defending Tribal Nations Amidst Damaging Rhetoric
To the Citizens of South Dakota and Concerned Parties Nationwide,
The South Dakota Green Party feels the urgent need to address recent comments made by Governor Kristi Noem regarding the U.S. southern border and the complex challenges faced by our tribal Tribal Nations. These statements, set against the backdrop of broader national conversations on tribal rights and sovereignty, carry significant implications for our state and our understanding of the values enshrined in our Constitution.
It is deeply concerning to observe such narratives being perpetuated, especially when they inadvertently weaken the unity and cohesiveness of our state. The state of South Dakota is only as strong as our tribal nations, which have been an integral part of our history, culture, and development.
To insinuate or hint that these sovereign Nations might be complicit in drug trafficking is a direct affront to them as members of tribal nations and as residents of South Dakota.
While public discourse and open debate are pillars of our democracy, it’s imperative that they are rooted in respect and understanding. Article VI, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution states, “All treaties are the supreme law of the land.” This is not just a statement of law but a challenge to our commitment to uphold promises made to tribal nations.
Yet, as we voice our concerns over these recent statements, we are also troubled by the noticeable silence from key figures within both the Republican and Democratic parties. This lack of condemnation, or even critique, signals a worrying complacency and underscores the need for diverse political representation to prioritize all South Dakotans’ voices.
This is one of the primary reasons we, the South Dakota Green Party, are fighting diligently to gain ballot access. We believe that every South Dakotan deserves to be heard, and every perspective deserves respect.
We are committed to ensuring that diverse voices, especially those historically marginalized or overlooked, have a platform and a say in the governance of South Dakota.
Our goal is simple yet transformative: to ensure that every citizen of South Dakota, irrespective of their background or affiliation, feels seen, heard, and represented. We stand in solidarity with our tribal nations and invite all South Dakotans to join us in this endeavor, championing a future where dialogue is inclusive, respectful, and constructive.
Let us move forward together, valuing the rich tapestry of cultures, histories, and perspectives that make South Dakota the vibrant state it is.
With sincere dedication to a brighter future for all,
South Dakota Green Party
