The Green Party of the United States congratulated Green Parties throughout Europe for their strong showing in the recent elections for European Parliament, where the Greens won 71 seats, up from 52.

News reports said that the "Green Wave" was driven by the party's strong climate agenda. The party polled particularly well among young voters and in cities.

"The Green Party began to campaign for a Green New Deal in the United States in 2010. With the dire warning by the International Panel on Climate Change that the world has only 11 years left to avoid catastrophic climate change, these election results show that voters are united in realizing that we must break from the ineffective policies of the long-standing major parties that primarily serve the interests of the wealthy and fossil fuel companies," said Justin Beth, Co-chair of the Green Party of the U.S.

"America needs to declare a climate emergency and transition to 100% clean renewable energy with zero emissions by 2030" added Darlene Elias, Co-chair and a Spokesperson for the Green National Women's Caucus. "We must immediately halt new fossil fuel projects. But we need a Just Transition that will ensure a guaranteed living wage job, single payer health care, education and housing for everyone. We have to put the needs of the 99% ahead of the greed of the 1%, unlike the two major corporate parties"

The Greens won nine of Germany's ten largest cities. The Greens finished third in France and second in Finland while tripling their vote in Ireland and doubling their vote in the United Kingdom. Reuters reports that in the Netherlands, exit polls showed GroenLinks' (GreenLeft's) share of the vote increased to 10.5%. In the previous month on April 22nd, Canadian Greens topped Prince Edward Island's two party status quo, coming in second to become the official Opposition party.

Ska Keller, one of the European Greens' two lead candidates for the post of European commission president, said that any parliamentary group that wanted Green support would have to "deliver on our three key principles: climate action, civil liberties and social justice"

The Green Party plans to run hundreds of candidates for local office throughout the United States in 2019.
