MLK Day Reflections

Today on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we listen to his reflections on the US Empire and the triple evils of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism in a country that was approaching spiritual death even then in 1967. During his speech, “Beyond Vietnam — A Time to Break Silence,” at Riverside Church in NY on April 4th of that year, he called the US the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today. He was assassinated a year later.
In today’s Democracy Now episode, we listen to two of Martin Luther King’s speeches set against a backdrop of footage from the civil rights movement to Vietnam.
His words are just as relevant today as they were 58 years ago.
We continue the practice of confronting the inter-related systems of violence that shape our world today. We take action with urgency.
