The REAL Green New Deal!
The Green New Deal is suddenly a hot topic in the news and on the streets. Did you know that the Green Party has been promoting a Green New Deal for climate protection and economic human rights in our platform and on the campaign trail since 2010?
Greens are glad to finally see a spotlight on a comprehensive plan to address the climate emergency and, in the process, create millions of good jobs. But most Democrats and environmental groups who have picked up our slogan have also watered down the program.
The Green Party’s Green New Deal makes a crash program for 100% clean energy by 2030 the economic stimulus in a broader economic program to meet everyone’s basic needs on an ecologically sustainable basis. It would finally enact the economic bill of rights advocated by the best of the original New Dealers, including the right to living-wage job, an income above poverty, decent housing, comprehensive health care, and a good education. It would convert the energy industry and banking into public utilities so we have the democratic power and financing to carry through a rapid energy transition.
Only the Green Party's Green New Deal calls for ending wars for oil from the Middle East to Venezuela. We want deep cuts in military spending to help fund human needs and a just transition to 100% clean, renewable energy by 2030. We want the U.S. to lead by example and by aid in a global Green New Deal to avert climate disaster and end global poverty. It is cheaper – and in the interests of ordinary people if not the global corporations – to be the world’s humanitarian superpower instead of the world’s policeman for global capitalism.
Will you join our call for a Green New Deal today by donating so we can make this a reality? Every dollar helps us spread the tenets of the full Green New Deal.
We know that the confusion and illusion of the Green New Deal slogan used by some progressive Democrats and even corporate Democrats like New York Governor Andrew Cuomo might make you wonder why not say yes to their partial proposals? These proposals have already lost. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s proposal for a Select Committee on a Green New Deal has already been defeated by Speaker Pelosi representing the corporate core of the Democratic Party that believes in an all-of-the-above energy policy. Cuomo’s “Deal” is just a cover for all-of-the-above, complete with subsidies for nuclear power and new fracked-gas power plants. And none of these “Deals” would cut back U.S. military operations, the biggest single source of greenhouse gas on the planet and the single biggest waste of resources we need for clean energy and human needs.
We need the Green Party more than ever to campaign for the full Green New Deal. The Green Party’s voice must be heard at this crucial time when the Green New Deal is at the center of public debate and social movements.
Thank you,
Howie Hawkins,
Former Green Party candidate for Governor of New York State
