Tom Siracuse 1938 – 2024
Thomas E. Siracuse, a cherished educator and devoted advocate, passed away on Jully 6, 2024. Born in New York City and raised in New Haven and Milford, Connecticut, Thomas was a 1956 graduate of Milford High School. He served with distinction in the United States Navy and the Peace Corps in Costa Rica. He earned degrees from the University of Connecticut and Columbia University and was fluent in Spanish and Italian.
Thomas spent many years teaching English as a Second Language at George Washington High School in New York City until his retirement in 1996. He continued his teaching career in Hostos College and Manhattan Community College, driven by his deep passion for education.
An avid traveler, Thomas delighted in exploring diverse culture across the Americas, Europe and North Africa. His enthusiasm for discovering new cultures and sharing his experiences with others enriched his own life and the lives of those around him.
Thomas’s generous spirit, quick wit and jovial nature will be clearly missed by all who knew him. His passionate beliefs were evident in his active involvement with the United Federation of Teachers and the Manhattan Green Party, where he served as chairperson and ran for New York City Council and the state legislature.His unwavering commitment to public service and environmental activism left a lasting impact.
He is survived by his sister Nancy Siracuse Gifford of Milford, Connecticut, nephew Frederick Griego (Lindsey Braun) of Portland, Maine, nieces Concetta LaFlemina (Joseph Tartaglia) of Bethany, Connecticut, and Kristine Griego Crisman of Des Moines, Iowa; two great-nephews, two great nieces, and dear friends Richard Wiltor and Rocco Corrado. Thomas was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Francis Siracuse Griego and Clement Griego.
A Celebration of Live will be held on Tuesday, August 13 at 2:00 p.m. at the New York Society for Ethical Culture, 2 W. 64th st in New York City. A private burial will follow on Wednesday, August 14 at 1:00 p.m. at Kings Highway Cemetery in Milford, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice, honoring Thomas’s enduring advocacy and civic engagement. His profound impact on education, his love for cultural exploration and his commitment to pubic service and environmental activism will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
